The constant buzzing of chatter echoes throughout the halls of the school building as Kai, Ryujin, and I make our way to our lockers. Luckily for us we managed to get our lockers next to each other and yes, maybe it had something to do with Kai's mom being on the PTA, but I wasn't complaining. I liked it this way.
Although there was one downside to where my locker was located. I just so happened to be the locker neighbor of not only Kai but to the heartthrob of the school, Sim Jaeyun or better known by everyone as Jake. He called it his "player" name or whatever and he was very nice, it was just that his presence always managed to attract me unwanted attention.
The bunches of his fangirls who almost always crowded his locker and occasionally Jake's soulmates who stopped by who attracted even more attention if that was possible.
He has six other soulmates who were popular as well all in their own ways but most of all for their handsome faces. I won't lie that I found them attractive myself but that doesn't mean I wanted to be anywhere near or a part of the 'I'm their last soulmate' fanclub. It's public knowledge that they're actively looking for their last soulmate which is what causes half of the girls to act super flirty around them, believing they're the last one. It's so stupid but funny enough I have one thing in common with them now, eight soulmates. But it's not like anyone will ever know now unless they're Kai or Ryujin. I shake the stupid thought away and open my locker with a sigh, not really wanting to spend my birthday at school of all places.
"Happy birthday, Y/n," Jake says with a large smile when I get to my locker catching me off guard completely. How did he know it was my birthday?
"How did you-"
"I asked Kai about it once," he says with a grin, making me glance over at Kai who held an innocent smile, shrugging his shoulders. Why did you have to do that Kai? I internally groan not wanting to engage with Jake afraid that his fan base might come after me.
I roll my eyes at Kai and send Jake an awkward smile not knowing what else to do or say "well thank you." I stare blankly at my locker after putting my bag inside, trying to remember what classes I have today. History and math? Or was it English? Although my thoughts are interrupted by Jake asking me something, making me completely forget what I needed to get out of my locker.
"You turn 16 today, right?" He asks, peeking his head around my open locker with sparkly eyes and sighing internally knowing what he was going to ask.
"Yes," I say but cut him off before he can ask me anything, "but don't ask me about soulmates."
He gasps quietly and gives me puppy eyes, "how did you know I was going to ask you about it?"
"Because everyone knows that when you turn 16 you are supposed to get your soulmark that shows you how many soulmates you have," I say, closing my locker after remembering what I need to get for history and for english later, "I'll see you later, Jake."
I gave him a small smile after feeling bad for abruptly ending the conversation like that but I also still wanted to limit my time with him. Nobody wants fangirls having you as their target. I turn towards Kai's locker to see he's not there and realize he's already started going towards our history class which just so happened to be the one class we have together. I let out a small sigh and caught up to Kai who giggled at the annoyed expression on my face, knowing he was the cause of it.
"Why did you tell him my birthday?" I ask with a groan. But also why was Jake even asking about it? Why should he care?
Kai just shrugs in response with a grin, "What? He asked me so nicely I couldn't say no."
"You could've certainly said no, politely," I mumble under my breath but Kai hears it and ruffles my hair seeing my grumpiness. I swat his hand away not appreciating him messing up the hair as I attempted to look at least decent today considering it was my birthday. I run my hands through my hair trying to fix it but not before throwing him a glare.
"I'll remember that for next time, hmm?" Kai teases with a cute grin that I couldn't say no to.
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever," I say dismissively trying to hide my smile when entering the classroom and going towards the seats near the back, "I just would prefer to avoid the soulmate conversation for the rest of the day."
Kai lets out a quiet sigh sitting in one of the rows as I follow suit, "I know, I didn't know he would ask about that when he asked me about when your birthday was, I swear."
"I know," I say, giving him a sympathetic smile and a small pat on the shoulder, "it's not your fault, Kai. Sorry for being so annoying today."
"Shush birthday girl," he says, giving a playful swat to my head making me whine, "you're not being annoying, you just didn't start off today the way you thought you would. It's not your fault for feeling this way, it's really your parents fault."
"You're right about that one," I say, leaning my head against Kai's shoulder with a long sigh as he smiles, "thank you for being my friend."
He smiles wider as I reluctantly force myself to sit back up when the teacher walks into the room to start class. I'm really lucky to have you and Ryujin.

"That is the most boring class in existence," Kai whines about history as we exit the class and I chuckle at the remark, but fully agreeing inside my head.
"I second that," I reply and glance up to see Kai already looking at me.
"Sadly," he says with a long sigh hugging you with a pout, "I have to go to science."
"Yeah," I look at my watch with a chuckle, "you should start walking soon too since it's on the other side of the school and we have two minutes left in the passing period."
"What?!? Tell me these things sooner Y/n!" He exclaims, making me laugh loudly as he makes a mad dash to the science wing. Payback for earlier.
I smile to myself proudly at my accomplishment of getting back at Kai and head into my english class. But to my surprise the usual empty seat next to mine is taken by Jay Park, of all people. He's in this class? How did I not know? And why is he sitting there of all places? My mind races trying to figure out what the typical cold and kind of mysterious guy is even doing in class, but nonetheless I sit in my normal seat. Lucky for me, he doesn't even spare me a glance which puts me at ease a bit knowing I won't have to be subject to his natural piercing gaze.
But it doesn't help feeling the jealous gazes of his "fans" looking in my direction not understanding why he was sitting next to me when he usually sat in the back, leaning back with his feet on the desk or just didn't show up at all. I glance back to see one girl glaring into my soul and immediately turn back around to unpack my stuff. I sigh quietly to myself and just try to refocus my attention onto the teacher who just entered the room.
Trust me, I'd like to know why he's sitting next to me just as much as you.
It had only been a few minutes into class when a tap on my shoulder snapped me out of my focused gaze to see Jay looking directly at me. I glance between him and the teacher for a minute confused as to what he wanted until he whispers, "do you have a pencil I can borrow?"
I resist the urge to roll my eyes but fetch a pencil from my bag anyways knowing I've done the same before, "here."
"Thank you," he whispers back before beginning to flip the pencil between his fingers while taking occasional notes. I just smile a little in return before turning back towards the lesson. He doesn't seem that cold to me but then again this is the first time he's talked to me. But maybe people just get the wrong impression. I shake my head a little to clear my mind of the stupid thoughts, why am I even thinking about it so much? I huff out a sort of sigh and focus back on my work trying to stop my mind from wandering to weird places again.
