Kai chuckles and happily pulls the library door open, gesturing for me to go inside dramatically, "birthday girl first."
I shake my head with a smile, "you're so extra," I say walking in the entrance and already beginning to look around the library for Jay hoping he kept his promise.
"What can I say?" Kai shrugs but proceeds to enter after me and ignores Ryujin who gasps loudly at his obvious ignorance of her presence.
"You hold the door for her but not for me?" Ryujin asks with a pout, after swinging the door open herself when following Kai inside who looks back at her with an innocent smile.
"Oh, must have slipped my mind," he teases and I sigh quietly to myself knowing Kai is walking on thin ice. But I guess this is his pay back for earlier when she made him clean up entirely himself. I giggle at the two knowing they're probably going to be petty with each other for a little while longer after this.
The two continue to banter in the background animatedly but quiet enough not to get shushed by the librarian. My eyes glance around the library again for Jay and smile a little seeing him in a back corner just sitting on his phone. I look back at the bickering pair and roll my eyes to see they're still going at it, "hey, Tom and Jerry, I'm gonna go finish my project."
Ryujin nods, "best of luck! Don't miss us too much," she says, blowing a kiss my way before Kai cuts her off, "I bet I'm Jerry."
"That's a very bold claim to make Kai," Ryujin retorts as the two continue the light-hearted argument, "obviously I'd be Jerry."
I giggle to myself at their antics and begin making my way over to Jay, managing to wave to catch his attention when he glances up from his phone. He gives a small nod of acknowledgement and gestures to the seat across from him while pulling out his notebook. I plop into the seat and take out my notebook as well but the undeniable silence that envelops us is clear as day. Jay glances up, clearing his throat and makes eye contact for only a short while before sighing, "let's just finish this quickly?"
"Definitely," I say, trying not to let my nerves get the best of me. It didn't help that I felt some of the fangirls of their soulmate fanclub keep staring me down. I feel like one wrong move, I'm going to be dragged away from here and beaten up or something like that. Just the thought makes a shiver run down my spine but I shake off the feeling to focus on the project. The sooner that's done, the sooner I can leave and not feel as if I'm under surveillance.
Only short bursts of conversation would occur when sharing what we've brainstormed with one another yet nothing seemed to be sticking. I couldn't help the annoyed sigh that escapes me, not wanting to spend any longer on this project.
"What about this?" Jay says, sliding his notebook over to me and I read over the page with a small smile.
"Song lyrics?" I ask for clarification but there is undeniable pinkness to the tip of his ears.
"If you don't want to-"
"I didn't say that," I reply reading over the lyrics again, "I'm fine with anything as long as it gets the project done."
Jay smiles at this, "then what do you think about the lyrics?"
"I think it definitely fits the prompt the teacher gave us," I say seeing the obvious connection that the lyrics had to the project the teacher assigned, "but how would we present this?"
Jay ponders for a minute, tapping his fingers against the table in a rhythmic manner. We both sit in a more comfortable silence than earlier until I snap my fingers thinking of something, "do you play any instruments?"
"I-" he starts but hesitates, tapping his fingers faster against the table in an obvious anxious pattern, "I kind of play the guitar."
"Really?!?" I ask excitedly, getting a side glance from a nearby librarian about the volume of my voice and I mouth a quick 'sorry'. Yet Jay's ears seem to turn a darker shade of pink and a shy smile escapes him.
"Yeah- but it's just a casual thing on the side," he rambles out so fast I almost miss it, "more of a hobby."
"That's still really cool," I say with a smile and thinking about how the presentation would work, "would you be willing to play some chords under the lyrics? Oh, but I guess we would need someone to sing as well."
"Do you sing?" he asks curiously, resting his head on top of his head.
"No-"
"Yes she does!" I hear Kai say behind me causing my eyes to widen at the intrusion. Just what is he doing? And saying that I can sing all of a sudden?
"What-" I start saying and turn around to face Kai whispering, "you know I only sing in karaoke with you guys. I don't like singing in front of other people, especially people from school."
"She'll do it," Kai says ruffling my hair as I swat his hand away feeling heat creep up onto my cheeks, "she's actually a great singer, just likes to deny it."
"Well, I'll only play guitar if you sing then," Jay states nonchalantly and I grumble slightly under my breath knowing that Kai is the reason why I'm now stuck in this predicament. He must have been eavesdropping somewhere.
"Fine," I accept with a bit of a pout knowing that I'll just have to suffer through it for the project.
Jay smiles brightly and I think it's the first time I've seen him truly smiling as if he was excited for this project now. He leans down to rummage in his bag for a second before pulling out his phone, "let me get your number so I can coordinate with you about practicing."
My number? I guess it only makes sense but why do I feel so nervous about giving him my number? It's only for a school project anyways. Ugh, what am I even thinking? It's not a big deal if I don't make it. He hands his phone to me and I'm tempted for a small moment to put a fake number but ultimately decide not to. Kai, who is currently peering over my shoulder, would be able to tell it's a fake number and would definitely make me fix it to the real one. That would be more embarrassing. So with reluctance I put my number in his phone and saved it before passing it back to him.
Kai chuckles evilly next to me and I have to refrain myself from tackling him to the ground knowing he's just laughing in victory. Why was he doing this anyways? But I push the thought aside and see Jay left a pencil on the table.
"Hey you left your pencil-"
"Keep it," he says with a smile that's almost blinding and sends a friendly wink my way, "it's yours anyways."
The memory of giving my pencil to him earlier resurfaces and I can't help the real smile that spreads across my lips at his weird way of giving it back, "thanks I guess."
He only nods in acknowledgement and waves a quick goodbye, not looking back on his way out of the library. Although I can't focus on it for long because Kai begins shaking me violently in pure excitement. I have to stop myself from falling and it's only when Ryujin tells him to stop does he realize that I'm about to fall over within the next second. But Ryujin immediately looks at me and raises her eyebrows suggestively having seen the entire interaction herself.
"Got his number, hmm?" Ryujin teases and elbows me in the side lightly making me roll my eyes realizing what they've gotten so excited about.
"We are NOT talking about this," I immediately avoid the topic and grab one of their hands in mine, beginning to drag them out of the library like they're little children, "now let's go or else we won't have time for me to get ice cream with you guys before my shift starts."
A/N: Hey lovelies! So sorry this chapter isn't longer but if I tried to make it any longer you wouldn't have gotten an update today hehe <3. I'm truly sorry for the lack of updates on this series, it's because this chapter was a difficult one for me to write. Set up chapters are either my best friend or worst enemy so here we are. Anyways I hope you enjoyed it and can look forward to the next update! My guess is that the next update will be June 1st as I'm extremely busy these next few weeks finishing out my semster! <3
But we've made some development with the mc and Jay! Plus always having some fun banter between Ryujin and Kai in there really livens up the chapter. They're slowly becoming my favorite pair to write for in this series...
