Essence P.O.V
"Brother, I see you have met my student," I hear my professor say from the door. I take my time to tear my gaze away from him and step aside, creating distance between us.
"I am not solely mistaken. We have met before; I am not so sure," he says casually, still looking at me. I slowly avert my gaze away from him again.
"Come on, Red, you have probably met a lot of people," my professor, who is his brother, tells him. I don't miss the part where his brother calls him "Red."
"Have we met before?" He asks. It's the fact that he remembers us meeting but doesn't remember me at all. The time we talked, I mean, how could he? I know I am being so unreasonable right now. It's how I am, always having a habit of expecting so much, a habit that has never brought me any good. I can't blame him. Who am I for him to remember me? Don't get me wrong, I just thought maybe he would remember me or get excited to see me.
"Um... You must be really mistaken. We have never met before," I surprisingly say, looking at him with a straight face.
"Oh, of course, then nice to meet you. I am Redverse; you can call me Red," he says calmly, offering me his hand. I hope I am doing a good job of hiding these floating emotions because right now, I am hurt. So, I give him my best fake smile.
"Nice to meet you too. I am Essence," I say, reaching for his hand and shaking it. As soon as I finish the last sentence, I drop his hand so fast.
"Professor, Redverse, I think I better take my leave now and leave the two of you alone. And again, it was really nice meeting you, Redverse," I say politely with my faking smile and walk towards the door to get out.
I don't remember how I fell asleep for so long since it's already late in the evening. When I am hurt, angry, or not okay emotionally, I tend to force myself to sleep just to forget about what bothered me. Tonight is our freshman welcome party, and I know I am not stepping my foot to that party. I am in the mood for exploration. I want to explore the streets of Baltimore, and that's what I just do. I pull my hair into a ponytail and wear my casual jumpers and a simple coat paired with a tank blouse and sneakers. I head to my little adventure with my phone GPS in my hand. I take pictures, stop by for a coffee, video call my cousins; they all get excited. By the time I am on my way back, I feel happy, and darkness has begun appearing. I turn a corner, and I also feel a car pull up behind, but I don't pay attention to it. In front of me, two black men stand. My eyes travel on both of them, and I panic before I even turn around to run.
"Don't even try to do what you're about to do," I hear a voice from behind, a familiar voice. Redverse. I don't even have time to think why he is here. I am just in panic mode.
"Or what? You think you can do crap to us?" one of them says, making his way towards us. I step behind, and Redverse holds me by my waist and pulls me behind him.
"Try me," he says, taking a step towards him. I hold out his arm before he goes near him. The man looks at me, then him, and leaves with his friend.
"You better take care of your girlfriend; it's not safe to roam these streets," the other friend says before turning to leave. Girlfriend, that's way too far, weird, and random. Do I like the sound of it? Maybe, yes, but only in my dreams.
"What's wrong with you? Walking in these streets at this hour alone?" Redverse scolds me, turning to me.
"I was having fun. I didn't know if that would happen. Don't scold me, Vee. I am not a child," I tell him after he orders me to get in his car. I also realize I called him "Vee," but I don't care right now, and he doesn't either, or so I think at least.
"You just acted like a child. I never said you are a child," he replies quietly. The drive is silent; he makes a stop at a shop and buys a milkshake, and he gives it to me. I thank him. His phone rings; he picks it up, and I hear a female voice. He tells her he will be right there. After a few minutes, he makes a stop and goes out of the car. I go out too, probably waiting for him.
"Babe, I thought you were stuck in traffic or something," the woman, who looks very elegant, says.
"I had to save a friend. That's why she is new here," Redverse tells her, giving her a kiss. He turns to me.
"Essence, this is Adelaide, my fiancée."
