Poetry: We All Fall Down

Author's Note: I got hit by a spark of inspiration and I've been very much in a horror mood lately, I wanted to write something spooky so I wrote up a little vampire-themed poem based on the vampire lore of my novels (specifically Blood of Mars), where vampirism is spread through blood-red rain that falls from the sky, afflicting victims with a terrible virus called Endzeit (literally German for end time) that not only alters their bodies, but their minds as well, leading to often gruesome outcomes...

I had this idea for a while, and I wanted to use the pattern of the classic "ring around the rosie" children's rhyme as a base, since this poem is all about a widespread vampiric pestilence, and some attribute the original nursery rhyme to being related to the Black Plague. I struggled at some parts but overall I think it came out okay, might change it up later if I think of something better. The poem being in all lowercase is also a stylistic choice.

we all fall down

ring around the rosie
pocket full of posies
ashes, ashes
we all fall down

skies plagued by clouds are blotting
red blood is surely clotting
raindrops, raindrops
they all fall down

the moon is surely rising
in pain they are all writhing
thirsty, thirsty
they all fall down

at night they hunt for someone
fangs stab the necks of loved ones
piercing, piercing,
they all fall down

in death they kiss so deeply
the blood, it tastes so sweetly
draining, draining
they all fall down
