Chapter 1. The meeting

Y/n had just transferred to Essex College for the spring semester, eager to leave behind the chaos of their previous school. Essex, with its sprawling ivy-covered buildings and vibrant student life, felt like a fresh start. Moving into their new dorm room, they couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and nerves. The campus was alive with the energy of students rushing to classes, lounging on the lawns, and catching up with friends.

On Y/n's first day, they entered their literature class, scanning the room for an empty seat. They spotted one next to a striking girl with blonde hair and a poised demeanour. Little did they know, this was Leighton Murray, one of the most popular girls on campus. Leighton exuded confidence and elegance, and she seemed to have an aura that drew people in. But today, she was lost in her thoughts, absentmindedly twirling a strand of hair.

Y/n quietly took the seat next to her, pulling out their notebook. As the professor began to lecture, Y/n noticed Leighton occasionally glancing their way. They couldn't help but wonder what she was thinking. When the class ended, Y/n started to gather their things, but the heavy stack of books slipped from their hands.

"Here, let me help you," Leighton offered, kneeling to pick up the fallen books.

"Thanks," Y/n said with a smile, their eyes meeting hers for the first time.

"You're welcome," Leighton replied, her usual cool demeanour softened by an unexpected warmth.

Their brief interaction was enough to spark curiosity in both of them. Leighton couldn't quite place it, but there was something different about Y/n, something that intrigued her. She brushed it off, thinking it was just a passing interest.

Chapter 2. Blossoming Friendship

Over the next few weeks, Y/n and Leighton found themselves thrown together by a series of group assignments in their literature class. Leighton, always the perfectionist, appreciated Y/n's diligence and attention to detail. Y/n, on the other hand, was surprised by Leighton's depth of knowledge and her unexpected kindness.

One afternoon, they were working on a project in the campus coffee shop. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the hum of conversation created a cozy atmosphere. Leighton was scribbling notes while Y/n typed on their laptop.

"Do you ever take a break?" Y/n asked with a chuckle, noticing Leighton's intense focus.

"Not really," Leighton replied without looking up. "I have to get this right."

Y/n admired her dedication but also saw the stress lines forming on her forehead. "Maybe you should take it easy for a bit. How about a walk around the campus?"

Leighton hesitated, but the idea of a break was tempting. "Alright, but just a quick one."

As they strolled through the campus, the setting sun casting a golden hue over the buildings, they talked about everything from their favourite books to their future aspirations. Leighton found herself opening up in a way she hadn't with many people. Y/n's presence was calming, and their conversations flowed effortlessly.

They ended their walk by a serene pond, sitting on a bench and watching the ducks swim lazily. Leighton sighed, feeling a rare sense of peace.

"You know," she began, "I don't usually do this."

"Do what?" Y/n asked, curious.

"Open up to people. Let my guard down," Leighton admitted, looking down at her hands.

Y/n smiled gently. "I'm glad you feel comfortable enough to do that with me. You don't always have to be perfect, you know."

Leighton looked up, meeting Y/n's eyes. At that moment, she realized how much she valued their budding friendship. Y/n saw past her polished exterior and accepted her for who she was, flaws and all.
