chapter five
"IN YOUR BONES"════ ⋆★⋆ ════
BLAIRE JOLTS AWAKE AS SHE HEARS A FAMILIAR VOICE CALLING OUT HER NAME. After the immediate confusion that greeted the girl, as well as the irritation she felt for being awoken so early in the morning — she came to the conclusion that the tone belonged to no other than Carl Grimes, who was now standing right outside of her cell with an amused expression looking down at the girl.
On the top bunk of their double bed, Jane was furiously brushing her eyes in an attempt to grasp the situation and come to terms with what was going on. The two siblings had seen each other once Blaire and Carl finished their numerous conversations and decided to go to sleep. Once she had reached their room, the older girl was greeted by Jane, who was simply playing with some toy she claimed that Carol gave her after story-time, a gesture so kind and pure that Blaire even remembers smiling after her explanation.
"What are you doing here?" She questions, her voice quiet and raspy from the lack of sleep she had gotten last night.
Although her tone and voice made an attempt to sound furious and threatening, both of the teenagers knew that she was simply confused as to why Carl was the one reaching out to Blaire and attempting to hang out with the girl. So far, they had only bonded yesterday night -- an action that was done thanks to Carl's numerous stories about himself and the people in the prison. Even if he didn't want to brag, he had made it extremely clear that he knew mostly everyone and that despite his age he was still well respected in this community. Something that Blaire was envious of due to her shy nature and introverted personality.
"You're helping me with chores. Come on, let's go." He stated, the amused smile on his face slightly growing larger as he noticed her confusion expand by the second.
"Excuse you? Since when?" She asks, not bothering to be polite or hide her mocking remarks from Jane. A responsible adult would argue that the younger Sheilds looks up to her sibling and would do anything to be as 'brave and fearless' as her -- which is why she shouldn't make such a mean remark to someone like Carl. However, Blaire is not a responsible adult, more so a fourteen-year-old girl who has no better things to do than to poke fun at her one -- maybe two -- friends.
"Since now." He stated once again, growing more impatient by the second as the girl in front of him made no real effort to wake up or agree to help him around with the chores he had been assigned.
In response to seeing him refuse to leave, Blaire quickly comes to the realization that he's not joking, and decides to throw her pillow in his direction -- a last effort to see if he caves in and ultimately gives up. He doesn't. The fluffy object hits his abdomen before falling to the floor, the silky case of the pillow most likely painted in a dusty gray now that it made contact with the dirty concrete of the prison. The thought made her accept the idea of doing chores all day, at least if by the end of it her cell block would be a little cleaner.
