The news had struck the town that a very renowned businessman, Will Harrington, had been murdered. His wife had summoned the finest detective from Magnus Detective Agency, Sir Edward Stone. Sir Edward had solved every case he took. As soon as Sir Edward reached Harrington's mansion, he came to know that someone had added poison to Will's juice. "A classic way to commit murder," said Sir Edward. Sir Edward was not working on this case alone; he had received orders from his agency that a new recruit would also be accompanying him. When Sir Edward asked the recruit's name, he replied, "You are my master, and I am your student. I am here to learn from you."

After assessing the situation, Sir Edward initially suspected five people: first and foremost, the servant who had given the juice to Will; second, Will's son, Thomas Harrington; third, Will's wife, Charlotte Harrington; fourth, Will's brother, Henry Harrington; and last but not least, a rival business group.
