Sir Edward ran towards Thomas's room. His junior kept asking him questions all the way, but he did not answer any of them. He opened the door loudly and instructed Thomas not to leave his room until the victim was found. "We will provide you with food in your room," he added.

They were in the room provided for their investigation. Sir Edward told his junior that by killing Will, Thomas would inherit his property, making Thomas the top suspect. The next day, Sir Edward started questioning Thomas. Thomas kept repeating that he did not murder Will. As Sir Edward was standing at the door, about to leave the room, he heard a piercing cry from Thomas. He looked back and saw a broken window and a bullet that had hit Thomas. Sir Edward looked outside the window, but there was no one in the lawn. He commanded the guards to close the gates of the mansion.
