Nory and I started to cautiously walk through the creepy forest, until we spotted arrows pointing down into underground doors where says "UDM". We looked at each other then yelled out.
"Hello!" I bend down to knock and the old guy in wack threads opened the doors scaring me and making me fall back. "Oops sorry kid... who are you?" he questioned. I got up and scoffed, "Nory" "Y/n" we introduced ourselves.
"We were right behind you on the walk this morning" Nory told the dude. The guy tried to remember and then Nory said, "I looked like this" she then posed. The guy still didn't recognized us and looked to his small paper. "Ah! yes, you are, yes, you were, yes, you did." he confirmed. Nory and I looked at each other and sighed in relief. "Okay come on down. And shut the door behind you."
Nory entered. but then stopped when she noticed I was hesitant in going. "Hey, it's gonna be alright, we have each other" she tried to comfort me. I then followed her.
"The door, kid" I heard. I rolled my eyes and shut the door behind me with my magic with Nory not realizing, and then continued to walk down the stairwell.
Nory and me looked around, then spotted emo-joe as he made eye contact with me. It broke off by the guy giving Nory and me our "uniforms".
Nory looked around "Where's the cool jacket and hoodie all the other kids get?" she announced. "Oh, uh, you get to wear your own cool jacket and, or hoodie."
I noticed that Nory was standing next to a badass looking girl, while I was standing next to emo-joe. He looked up at me since he was sitting down and I glared down at him. I still haven't forgiven him for what he had said. "Isn't that exciting... in theory."
I sat down at a desk that was in front of emo-joe and behind Nory's desk and placed the stuff that was given from him on top, while Nory was still questioning. "We don't get a special color?"
"No. But you do get a desk. so sit down. pop a squat. take a seat. I am Mr. Skriff, and I am in charge of the UDM." he introduced himself.
"What's this place? Are you sure y/n and I'm supposed to be here?" Nory kept asking questions. The curly haired boy then said, "Did you tank your placement exam like us?" pointing at emo-joe and the badass girl.
"No! I blew their minds with magic they could barely understand. And I'm sure y/n much better, though, what did you do?" she asked me. My eyes widened at the sudden question then looked away.
Mr. Skriff saw me uncomfortable then took the opportunity to interrupt the question. "In other words you tanked your placement exam. Like them. He made smoke instead of fire." pointing at Elliot.
"She pushed the vase away instead of towards her." pointing at Pepper.
"He could go up, but he couldn't come down" pointing at Andres.
"You couldn't be just a kitten." pointing at Nory then pointing at me,
"She has more than one power, which would be impossible, but here we are." I put my head down when he said that making me cringe.
"So, butt. Seat. Now." he told Nory. Nory started to sit down while still saying, "I'm still pretty sure I'm not supposed to be here." her being in denial.
"oh, and I'm def for sure you are. Why? Because you're wonky, weird defective magic. We don't always know why it happens. We don't really care why it happens, but when it does, you come to me. So, welcome to the school of Upside-Down Magic." Clarifying for Nory to understand.
"So UDM means-"Nory still trying to figure out. "Upside down magic." Congratulations, you are a genius or rather, not a genius, at least where magic is concerned." Skriff interrupted.
Nory had a look of upset making Mr. Skriff guilty. "But Buckle up, kiddo! With a little luck, we'll get that fixed." trying to cheer up Nory, almost giving me hope. "really?"
"No, probably not. I mean maybe, but not usually. Possibly, I wouldn't count on it." he kept rambling. Pepper then asked "But we, like get to do magic though, right? Right?!" she declared with a threatening look.
"Uh, no. No, we do not. We study, like school stuff here. Okay?! Math and things. Assignments." Skriff said. "Magic assignments?" Elliot asked hopefully
"Are you listening? No! No magic! It's my job to keep you productive, busy, engaged. It's also my job to be the grounds keeper and handle general maintenance issues at this fine institution." he clarified.
"Well then I'm gonna send my mom a letter to pick me up from this so called magical school." I said with sarcasm as I got up to grab a paper and pencil to start writing.
"You might not wanna do that" Skriff informed me. "Oh and why not." saying with sarcasm once again as I sat down and started to write down.
"Because it takes 5 months to get to her" I glared at him with my eyes red as I burned the paper and threw the pencil towards the wall angrily. "So, wait. Are you a teacher or what?" Pepper interrupted.
"Am I a teacher? What I am is very busy, okay? So, please, do not pester me with abstract questions." he said exhausted.
But Nory continued, "Well, here's a clear, direct one then, why can't we study magic here?" Nory asked curiously.
"Because your magic is wrong." Everyone turned their heads to the headmaster coming down the stairway. "But that's why we're here. To learn how to do it right." I argued.
"You are never going to learn how to do it right. Upside-down magic will never be proper magic. In the eyes of Sage, you are unteachable." She said as she walked toward the front of the classroom and slammed down a giant book at Skriff's desk.
"So, what happens now?" Elliot asked looking upset. "You sit here and you wait."
"for what?" he continued to ask. "For your magic to disappear." She is really getting on my nerves.
"Magic is like a muscle. If you don't use it, it will wither, and eventually cease to work. And then, we send you back into the world, where you can pursue a life as.. and accountant, or a dog groomer or whatever it is people do." She said while fake smiling.
"What possible reason could you have for take a bunch of perfectly go magic kids and letting them go bad like a bunch of bananas you forgot in a drawer?" Nory argued with determination in her voice.
"To protect humanity." Ms. Knightslinger spread her hands upwards and fire came out. At this point, I just want to leave.
"For awhile, Sage treated UDMs like any other students. Until 1939, and a student named Reginald Roberts." I heard this story a bunch of times that at that point it made me sick of hearing it over and over again, so I laid my head down until the headmaster came towards my way with an apple.
"Shadow magic cannot work without a human host. And UDMs are its sole target. Like how a crack in a piece of fruit allows the rot to seep in" She continues. I scrunched my face in disgust. Why must she waste food.
"That's you. You are that cracked fruit. So. You will stay down here. You will not practice magic. And your magic will die." She explained making it clear for all of us. Everyone looked hopeless. I started to think maybe it was a mistake coming here.
"But better it than all of us. I suspect there are no further questions. Thank you. Skriff. Skriff!" She called on him making him jolt up as he catch the rotten apple. "As you were." she walked out.
"Okay. Well then, let's begin with my inaugural lecture, "How to deal with having all of your dreams crushed by smushing your feelings into a ball deep inside you stomach." Now write this down." Skriff told us.
Nory, Elliot and Andres opened their journal, while Pepper broke her pencil in half, and I used my magic so grapes could appear in my hand and started to eat them. (Since she has the power of Earth and fruits and vegetables are apart of it.)
If we aren't gonna study magic, why should I study for normal subjects. It's not like they are going to give me a grade or expel me which doesn't sound so bad, but I shouldn't do that to my mom. Why did I get these powers, why can't I be normal.
