The moment he kissed me back, something shifted. The world around us dissolved until there was nothing left but the warmth of his mouth, the hand firm against my waist, and the impossible awareness of how close a stranger could feel.
Rain had begun to pour more harshly, cold drops soaking through my clothes, but I barely noticed. His hand slid to the back of my head, holding me with a possessiveness that should have frightened me.
Instead..I leaned into him.
His lips found mine again, slower this time, lingering just long enough to steal another breath before deepening the kiss. I lost all sense of time. Maybe it lasted a minute. Maybe five. All I knew was the taste of rain, coffee, and him.
Then his teeth caught my lower lip. A quiet gasp escaped me as I broke the kiss, stumbling back a step. My lungs burned for air, and without thinking, I squeezed my eyes shut, as though not looking at him would somehow steady the chaos he'd left behind.
"Open your eyes." His voice was low enough to disappear beneath the rain, yet it reached me anyway.
I felt him step closer. Close enough that the rough scrape of his stubble brushed my cheek.
My breath caught. The rain was freezing, but everywhere he stood near me felt unbearably hot.
Slowly, I opened my eyes. The first thing I saw was he was already looking at me. Not smiling. Not speaking. Just watching me with an intensity that made my pulse stumble all over again. It wasn't rushed or impatient. If anything, it was worse.
He looked certain. Without realizing it, I caught my lower lip between my teeth. His eyes dropped to the movement. A faint smile appeared on his face. Of course he noticed.
His thumb brushed lightly across my lip, coaxing it free. The touch barely lasted a second, yet it lingered long after his hand moved away.
"Do you have any idea what you just did, Doll?"
My throat tightened. "I..." I looked away for a moment before forcing out an awkward laugh. "I just thought it'd be fun." I shrugged, trying to sound far more confident than I felt. "Like in the movies."
The excuse sounded ridiculous the second it left my mouth. He didn't answer. He simply looked at me, quiet enough to make me wonder if he could hear every thought racing through my head.
Then he laughed. It wasn't loud. It wasn't mocking. It was warm, effortless... the kind of laugh that made the corner of his eyes soften.
Against my better judgment, I smiled back and looked across the valley and saw there was no one. Not even the one who I wanted to show this.
