Deal with the Devil
"Come on come on come ON,"
Being a witch isn't always easy. Going to school for witchcraft even less so. Well school is a bit of an overestimation, it's more like one class with three students taught by the village elder.
Getting to be one of the three students took me a while. Every year she only accepts three students. She says it's an ancient lucky number. I had to perform some ridiculously huge stunts for her to accept me this year. Bringing the best harvest this place has ever seen for three months, healing seven people from imminent death and to butter her up a little, a stone statue made of her. She's an overachiever however, and told me the statue should've been made from marble but eventually she enrolled me.
I tried my best to be her favorite student, hoping to impress her with every single homework she gave us and it has worked perfectly so far. But even the best struggle sometimes, as I am struggling to get this very specific alchemy test correct. I've studied all the material relating to it and have found nothing. So like the maniac I am, I'm doing the most reckless thing a witch can do. Summoning a demon.
Deals with demons can range from simple tasks that last for various periods of time to the very soul of the person. The very act of summoning one is similar to a half deal, meaning even if you don't accept it, you have to do exactly half of what the demon suggests. Luckily, very few demons ask for one's soul these days so I deeply hope I can get one to cooperate with me on that. Not even I am that stupid.
The problem as of this moment is that I can not for the life of me pronounce the Latin words right. Language never being my strong suit. But I am not going to give up when I'm so close to perfection. The candle that is supposed to reach a certain shade of red grows closer and closer to it with each try. I keep telling myself that maybe the next one will be it.
"Ego sancte iuro me facere medietatem et medietatem pacis mee si etiam animam meam recipiam."
The candle glows slightly more red than the precious time but still no sight of the bloody red it is supposed to be.
I sigh. "Ego sancte iuro me facere medietatem et medietatem pacis mee si etiam animam meam recipiam."
Slightly more.
I throw the book angrily. "Ego sancte iuro me facere medietatem et medietatem pacis mee si etiam animam meam recipiam." I shout angrily.
The candle glows darker and darker, rising to nearly touch the roof, I drop to my knees at the sight as a sudden gust of wind blows through the open window to put out the flame.
I keep staring at the candle for a second longer before I sigh with defeat. So close, yet so far. Maybe giving up wouldn't be so bad after all.
"You summoned me?"
I freeze in my spot, slowly turning around to come face with face with a man, no demon.
He appears to be much shorter than I expected, with stormy gray eyes and jet black hair. Small black horns adorn his head and his nails are shaped as claws, his veins on his forearms appear to be completely black. All the tell tale signs of a demon but he appears to be wearing normal clothes. I frown at that.
"Well?"
I jolt awake at the sound of his voice, it's deeper than any man in our village but has a husky undertone that makes me feel warm all over.
