Y/n leaned away from her window to look at Asher, who was on his phone.
"You text them?" she questioned.
The boy nodded. "Yeah, we're good."
"Good."
The princess adjusted herself in the limousine. The whole summer had passed by in seemingly a blink and the girl was actually quite excited to go back to Auradon again.
As things had been peaceful, she had been able to see her friends over the break, too — her and Asher had been to Auradon for one time and Carlos, Evie and Jane had visited the North twice. One of the times queen Merida had been away but the second they'd managed to meet her, which Y/n was glad about. It seemed that Merida was quite alright with Y/n's current state of life and not so protective of her as she had been a little more than a year and a half ago, when Y/n was first invited to Auradon in the middle of the school year.
Now she was about to start her last year, having been cooped up the summer between her first and second year. She was thankful that her second year had been peaceful, at least.
Still, they had about a week before any lessons started. Despite that, they were still somehow running — or driving — late to Jane's birthday party. But, as it was, Asher had just informed the girl in question and Y/n had texted Carlos and Evie for them not to wait up at Evie's house — Evie's 4 Hearts was its name, the girl with blue hair had bought it for the money she made off of making dresses. The girl's business was still running as well as ever and initially the group was to meet up there but given the situation, adjustments had to be made.
"We won't be too late," Y/n commented, checking the time on her phone. She had noticed the nervous bounce of Asher's leg. Well, they are dating so I get why he'd feel a little antsy right now.
The blond boy across from her stopped bouncing his leg immediately, now having caught on to his not-so-soldier-like habit. "Right."
Y/n smiled, leaning forward so she could make eye contact with her long-time friend who was looking down in shame and worry. Neither of those emotions were common visitors of Asher so the princess of the North felt the need to say something.
"Ash, it's fine," she started, "Jane understands, you know that. And—"
"It's not that I don't think she'll understand, I just wanted to be there for her," Asher snapped, cutting Y/n off as he dragged a hand across his face. Then he leaned back. "Sorry, just..."
The princess leant back as well. "I get it, Ash. If it were Carlos' birthday, I wouldn't want to miss it either."
The boy sighed and nodded before smoothly changing the topic. "I'm glad you two are happy."
A smile made its way to Y/n's face. "Me, too."
The limousine hit a bump in the road and both of the teenagers swayed before facing each other with bright smiles. Roads were only bumpy right before reaching Auradon.
And indeed, the greenery of the North was bit by bit replaced with more sophisticated and well-manicured gardens, first the royal family's castle and then Auradon Prep. The limousine drove past both and onto a smaller dirt road again, rounding the corner to Evie's 4 Hearts.
Y/n could feel her heart beating out of her chest with happiness. They still had to unload their stuff and send the limousine back on its way but even then they were still only minutes away from reuniting with their friends at Jane's birthday.
The vehicle skidded to a stop and Y/n and Asher bolted out of the limousine equally as quickly, opening the trunk before their driver could and lifting their suitcases out.
"Thank you so much for driving us here," Y/n said.
The driver, an old man with greying hair who still had a twinkle in his eyes, bowed. "Of course, Your Highness. Is there anything else you need?"
Y/n quickly glanced at Asher. The boy shrugged.
"No, I don't think so. You may go home now," the princess then said.
The driver bowed again and then it didn't take long for the limousine to turn around and disappear onto the curvy road again.
By then, Y/n and Asher had already dragged all their suitcases to the front door and the girl had just crouched, lifting a flower pot to take the key from under it when her vision flashed black and white.
