*LATER THAT DAY*
the chatter in the cafeteria buzzed around estella like a swarm of excited bees. alahna, madi, and bella were practically vibrating with anticipation, their voices a chorus of 'can you believe it's next week?' and 'what are we going to wear?'
estella, however, felt a knot of apprehension tighten in her stomach. "lola's party is going to be epic!" alahna exclaimed, her eyes sparkling.
'i can't wait! it's going to be the best party of the school year," madi chimed in, her voice dripping with excitement.
estella bit her lip, trying to find the courage to speak. "i don't know...," she mumbled, her gaze falling to her hands.
"what do you mean?" bella asked, concern lacing her voice.
"well, you guys know about matt...," Estella trailed off, her cheeks flushing.
matt, the guy estella hates with every inch in her body, was notorious for attending every party in town. he was a charming, popular senior who always seemed to be surrounded by people. the problem was, estella had been avoiding him ever since her dumped three months previously but fate wasn't on exactly on board with the plan. she was absolutely terrified of running into him again.
"estella, come on, it's literally just one party," alahna said, her tone gentle. "you can't let one guy keep you from having fun and who knows, maybe there would be other guys for you to meet,."
"yeah, and besides, there'll be tons of people there. you probably won't even notice if he's around," madi added, trying to reassure her friend.
bella, usually the loudest of the group, spoke up. "estella, it's important to do things you enjoy, even if you're a little scared. it's okay to feel nervous, but don't let it control you."
estella looked at her friends, their faces filled with understanding and encouragement. their words, coupled with her own desire to not miss out on the fun, started to melt the ice in her heart. the knot in her stomach started to loosened up but slightly.
"okay," she finally said, a small smile playing on her lips. "i'll go. but if i even see a someone who even looks similar matt, you guys have to distract me."
alahna, madi, and bella erupted in cheers. "deal!" they shouted in unison.
as estella walked out of the cafeteria with her friends, a sense of relief washed over her. she knew that going to the party wouldn't necessarily erase the awkwardness with matt, but it was a step in the right direction.
and besides, she had her best friends by her side, ready to offer support and distraction, which was all the courage she needed. the thought of a fun night with her friends, filled with laughter and memories, overshadowed the fear of encountering Matt.
lola's party might be a little nerve-wracking, but estella knew it was going to be an unforgettable night.
after a long day at school, matt stared at his phone, a frown etched on his face. the group chat buzzed with excitement about lola's party next week.
nick , his elder brother, was already planning his outfit, while chris, the youngest, was brainstorming prank ideas. matt, however, felt a knot of anxiety in his stomach.
'guys, i don't know if i can go,' he typed, feeling the words heavy in the digital space.
'what? why not?' chris responded immediately, followed by a flurry of question marks from nick.
'estella might be there,' matt typed, avoiding their probing questions.
estella, even the name itself sent a shiver down his spine. even though he was the one who broke her heart, he wanted it so badly to himself. but to make it even worse then it could've been, his last encounter with her had been disastrous, overhearing that .
"dude, you can't let one disappointing encounter stop you!' nick typed, his reply laced with brotherly exasperation. 'lola's parties are legendary! you're missing out on all the fun.'
chris, bless his innocence, chimed in, 'yeah, and estella is probably just as nervous as you are. maybe you can even try to talk to her again!'
matt sighed. he knew they were both right. he couldn't let his fear of a failed interaction with estella dictate his life. he had been avoiding any socializing with her for almost a week, and it was starting to feel like he was losing himself.
'okay, fine,' he typed reluctantly, feeling a wave of relief wash over him. 'i'll go. but you guys owe me!'
the group chat erupted with cheers. chris and nick promised him a night of unforgettable fun, and matt, despite his lingering apprehension, allowed himself to feel a flicker of excitement.
maybe, just maybe, this night wasn't just about lola's party. maybe it was about facing his fears, about reminding himself that life was meant to be lived, not hidden away.
he knew he still had a long way to go in terms of his confidence, but with his brothers by his side, he felt a small spark of hope ignite within him. maybe, just maybe, this night would be the start of something new.
maybe, just maybe, it would be the night he finally found his voice, and maybe, just maybe, estella wouldn't be so intimidating after all.
it couldn't be possible to see your ex in a sea of people in a high school party, right? there's no way fate could ever do that, or could it?
