Three months later
"Hey, Hermione" Esme sat down next to Hermione in the Great Hall for breakfast "Hey, are you up to dress shopping tomorrow?"
"For?" Esme took a bite of toast "The ball? How did you forget?" Hermione shouted "Sorry but I'm not a dancer, I won't be going" She shook her head and took another bite "Yes you are, it's a tradition. You will be going, Esme" She rolled her eyes and stood up "Fine, I'll go to the stupid ball okay? But I'm not dancing" Esme walked over to the coffee station by the Slytherin table, as she went to grab a cup Draco walked up and grabbed the cup she was about to grab, she grabbed a different cup and started to pour the coffee "Since when do you drink coffee?" He asked, "Since when did you decide to speak to me again?" She took a sip and walked away, sitting back down with Hermione. "So, tomorrow, we will go dress shopping. Who will you go with?" Hermione asked, Esmes eyes watched Draco's every move "Esme?"
"What?" She took her eyes off Draco and looked at Hermione "Who are you going with?" Esme looked down at her coffee as she tapped her nails against the cup "No one asked me"
"Oh, I'm going with Ron. Maybe ask Harry?"
"No, he's going with Cho, he told me"
"I take it you two aren't a thing then" Esme almost choked on her coffee "No, I was quite disappointed. I did like him" She only used Harry as a distraction. "Well maybe ask a boy from your house"
"You must be a comedian Hermione, not a single Slytherin boy has looked in my direction"
"Malfoy sure has" She whispered with a giggle "I'd rather die" Esme tracked Draco down again with her eyes, she watched him laugh and talk with Goyle, his smug face looked punchable and the way he put his hand through his hair irritated Esme. Everything he did she noticed.
"Whatever happened to you two? I almost started to think you two were friends"
"Friends? How low do you think of me? Jeez Hermione" Hermione stood up "I need to go talk to Professor McGonagall about the ball, I'll see you later" Hermione left the Great Hall. Esme looked over at Draco and he was already staring at her, his gaze was sharp and cold, Esme chugged her coffee and slammed the cup on the table, echoing the room before storming out of the Great Hall. Draco watched Esme storm out of the Great Hall, his eyes made her leave, he hoped that was the reason. "Hey Draco who are you taking to the ball?" Goyle asked "No one, I'm simply not going" Draco picked at his food "What? Man, you have to go! Who knows you might get to snog"
"Like you have ever snogged Goyle" Draco raised an eyebrow as he started to cut his food "I have so!"
"Your mother doesn't count idiot" Draco finished eating and stood up. He walked into the common room and saw Esme sitting at the table in the corner studying alone, he wanted to go bug her but he also didn't want to disturb her peace. She sat there so peacefully, so quiet. He liked it when she was quiet, that's when she showed the most emotion, she never realized how much she made him think, think about his feelings and emotions. He hated being emotional. That's why three months ago when he showed her his dark mark he avoided her, he didn't want to become that vulnerable again. As he stood there looking at her the door opened and McGonagall walked in "Ah Draco there you are, I need the house president from each house to practice the dance for the ball, you need a partner now" She glanced over at Esme "Miss Jones, you shall be the partner" Draco looked behind as he put his hands in his pockets, he looked at her as she stared with anger. Maybe disturbing her peace was a good thing. Esme walked alongside Draco, following McGonagall. She was furious that she was chosen to practice with Draco, her enemy. They arrived at the dance room, Filch was standing by a huge horn speaker as his cat was lying on his arm. "Put your things on the bench over there dear" Esme took her bag off and dropped it on the bench. "Robe as well Esme" She took off her robe and tossed it on the bench, Draco took off his suit jacket and she became distracted by the way he looked in a white dress shirt and black pants. "Now each house president has a solo dance at the beginning of the ball. I'm not saying you two will be official partners but you will practice together so it would be recommended" Esme looked up at Draco and rolled her eyes when he looked back down at her "Malfoy, please place your hand on her waist" Without hesitation, his hand gripped her waist, pulling her close, Esme let out a gasp, they both locked eyes "Jones, place your hand on his shoulder and both of you grab each other's hand" Esme placed her hand on his shoulder, feeling his toned muscles underneath his thin shirt. Both of their hands clasped together, his skin was soft and cold. "Let's start with basic steps" Esme took a deep breath "Ready and one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four" Esme and Draco took one step forward and back, side to side, she was surprised she didn't step on his feet. "Beautiful job, now let's try with music, Filch please do the honours" Music started to play and Draco looked down at Esme, looking her up and down "Ready mud blood?" She just rolled her eyes, they started to do the dance steps and feeling their bodies together, how gracefully they moved together, it would almost look as if they were made for each other but that's the opposite of what they wanted. As much as she hated him she really did enjoy dancing with him. He then spun her around, he watched her skirt flow up almost revealing her underwear, and a small smile appeared on his lips as he watched her. He stopped spinning her and pulled her close to his chest as his arm was fully wrapped around her back "You're a hideous dancer you know" He said "And you're hideous" She said with a cocky smile. He dipped her backwards, looking her up and down, his eyes roaming her body "That makes both of us" His eyes imprinted her soul and she started breathing heavily "Fuck you" He lifted her, spinning her around once more "In your dreams mud blood" Esme stumbled into his arms then quickly recovering herself. Draco lifted her in the air, and he grabbed her thighs, holding her in the air, she looked down at him and he had a smirk on his lips as he looked down at her thighs that were directly in front of his face. He slowly dropped her as she glided down his body and his hands slowly moved up to her waist as she held his shoulders, their faces were almost touching as they both started to breathe heavily. The music stopped by the tension between them stayed, they didn't move away from each other "Perfect!" McGonagall broke the tension and they pushed each other away "I expect you both to be practicing out of this room on your own time"
"You're serious?" Esme crossed her arms "Yes very serious, this ball will be perfect and you both will be my diamond dancers, stars of the show if you will"
"Why us?" Draco asked "Well, don't tell the others but you both danced the best together, I'm quite shocked" Esme grabbed her bag and robe, storming out of the room, Draco chased her out "Storming off again? You do that a lot" She ignored him "I'm talking to you!" He said standing in front of her "You lost your chance to get any conversation out of me! You completely avoided me for three months straight for no reason and now we have to dance together and you want to talk to me. Seriously?" Draco widened his eyes "Seems like I got a conversation out of you. Plus I'm not even going to the ball so you don't have to worry about that"
"Oh, who will I dance with? We are the diamonds of the ball apparently" She crossed her arms "Not my issue. Oh, how I missed your attitude, plus, I didn't avoid you, I'm honestly flattered you thought about me but I simply just don't see you around" He scratched the back of his neck "Right, we literally had class together a few days ago or should I say, every day. I don't even know why I care, you make me just so ughhh" She stormed past him, bumping into his shoulder.
