                                 I been going through changes.
I prayed to God and I made it.
Nobody did me no favors.
I'm sorry if you can't take it.

<Adaline's POV:

Before I knew it, we were already at Truthman College. I wish I had stayed up, looked as we crossed the Brooklyn Bridge, passed my favorite soul food spots, and stared at the tall buildings a bit before I came to Philly. There is nothing wrong with it, but it's just not Brooklyn.

"Adaline, cmon! We gotta get out the car and unpack, Ms. Packed her whole goddamn bedroom with her."
Nala nagged tugging on my arm, pulling me from my thoughts immensely.
"Okay okay! I'm comin, damn!"
With that, I allowed those thoughts to come back at another time, right now I needed to be locked in. I'm in fucking college, and that meant F R E E D O M. (Aka - strict parents go bye bye 👋🏾) I tried not to smile too hard, as I practically yanked at my luggage a lil too eagerly! Nala smirked at me while my parents weren't lookin before she snickered a word under her breath,
"Trick." I laughed because she already knew what type of timing I was on.

As we walked through the campus, Truthman was like another fucking world.
The welcome ceremony, was a cook out. With. The. Whole. Campus.
I'll admit, this shit was nothing like Brooklyn, I ain't never seen no shit like this. Everyone looked like they knew each other, it was like a summer block party, but with College Kids. A small realization took over me as I saw a variety of people...specifically a species I tried not to interact with too much, ....men.

"Line, don't even start with that shit, they not gonna bite you." She whispered fake mad at
My paranoid tendencies. My parents were already pulling me and Nala away from the cookout and into the dormitory housing, so that we can finish unpacking before the other freshmen and have a "head start."
(There's nothing you can do when it comes to over prepared Caribbean families.)
Anyway, we get into our dorm and me and Nala had instantly picked each other to be roommates before we even moved in to the school. We both refused on having a damn "crazy/evil roommate story".
"This is niceeeee" Nala bursted out as we walked around the room a little bit, forcing a small chuckle out of me before saying.
"Ain't got no roaches or nothangggg!" We both laughed at our little inside joke, that was a result of maybe too much social media for the average functioning human being.

"Alright girls, enough of hee hee haa haa's. We need to unpack and decorate the room. Epi-dats it." My mom said, her voice chasing behind our laughter and catching it as we straightened up, still little smiles on our face. We tighten up, and proceeded to rearrange our beds, desk, and closet. I needed significantly less space in my closet compared to Nala, who could probably name every runway show known to man. I just needed space to do my flexibility and mobility stretches to be able to dance to the best of my ability. So the compromise was to give Nala half of my closet space, and she could move her desk in a corner (which she hated btw) so I can have space on the floor.

{A few hours and OCD diagnoses later}

We all were out of breath, my Haitian father with a pop belly put to work moving heavy stuff, my Trinidadian mother holding her back from bending down under the mattress to "check for bedbugs" and me and Nala from literally putting up wallpaper over the wall's original white color, and making the room look like....
"us".

Our room looked like it didn't even belong on campus and my parents looked around, before giving me the long awaited speech.
"Um lemme go check the bathroom out real quick." Nala said, like a dickhead to bail from my parents passing the lecture onto her. She hid by the frame of the door with her phone in hand, recording and making it 100x harder to look my parents in the eye seriously.
"No boys, no sex, no drugs, no skipping, no parties, no pregnancy, no tattoos, no piercings.... " (brief pause to pass it over to my mom) "No fights, no skimpy clothes, No "sleep overs with boys", No slacking, and don't have no body calling my phone with bad news."
Nala was DYING behind the door frame as my parents basically listed their own version of the Ten Commandments for me, my head trying to process all the shit I just heard.

After a while they got ready to leave, giving me and Nala a hug. (yes, she made her way back in after BAILING)
"I love you Mom, I love you Dad." I say gently as they FINALLY walk out the door before saying. "Adaline Rose Thomas, don't forget what we said." My mom said sternly, before closing the door completely.

And with that, the weight was gone...I was basically and technically FREE! Me and Nala waited a bit for the steps to fade before we squealed and hugged each other, about the shackles being broken.

Truthman College was going to be everything I wanted and more, and I was going to make sure of it.
