23. I cover my sadness with a mask

I didn't remember when I left Elenas' house, but I was in the hospital all night from 2am until morning, with Matt Donavan. He went out to the bathroom while I stayed with his girlfriend.

I was sitting next to Caroline talking about how she felt or if she needed anything and watching Jersey Shore, when Bonnie and Matt entered.

Bonnie came in, and Caroline got up, just like she did to me, and smiled up at her. "Jersey Shore is on." The blonde giggled to our other best friend and hugged her. "Careful, still a little sore." Bonnie apologized and then hugged me.

"You okay?" I whisper into her ear as we hug. She then nods and smiles back at Caroline, hoping no tears would fall from her eyes. I sit back down next to Caroline on her bed, just as I was doing before.

"They say I am healing really quick." Caroline smiles up at us, and I put my hand on hers. Bonnie and I share a look before we were interrupted by Matt leaning his head down to Caroline.

"My turn." Matt leans down and kisses her. I make a disgusted face and turn my head to the side.

"Eww, children are a foot." I exclaim, pointing my fingers between me and Bonnie rapidly. I smile slightly at my best friend's happiness and comfort with her new boyfriend.

"Isn't he sweet." Caroline smiles up at Matt and Bonnie once more, giving me a small annoyed glance. "Why are you crying?" We all looked up at Bonnie. "Oh, Bon." I got up and gave her another hug. I felt the exact same last night.

"I'm just happy you're okay." Bonnie explains as I wipe the tears from her face.

"Oh, I love you guys." Caroline holds all our hands together and grin from ear to ear.

"We love you." We all respond to her, honestly. Matt gives Bonnie a side hug in comfort as we all chuckle and hold hands.

There was a buzz that came from the side of Caroline's hospital room. We all looked over, and I noticed my phone charging and vibrating as it was getting a call.

I sigh and get up off the bed. I grabbed my phone and what I thought was Elenas leather jacket but now know it belongs to Katherine, her doppelganger.

"Sorry guys, it's my mom. I'll leave you three. I hope to be back later. Love you care. I love you guys." I kiss Caroline's cheek and then hug Matt and Bonnie before calling the most recent person in my missed calls tab.

I walked out of Mystic Falls hospital and lit up a cigarette as I took the bake way to my house in hopes nodoby (putside of my friend group) would see me smoking and tell my mother.

Calling back my mother, I remember it was my father's funeral or wake. I was still in denial of his death. I didn't know what to think. I wasn't sad, which is horrible, but I wasn't happy either.

I have no idea how to feel.

When I got back home, I snuck through, past my mother and brother, to get dressed. I got on a black dress that was laid out on my bed for me to wear by my mother's request. I did a slight makeup look and put on some black heels.

I cover myself in perfume and then walk down the stairs to greet everyone with my brother, again by my mother's request. I saw my brother was by the door with another man that I didn't recognise from behind.

"Tyler? What happened to you? You're like twelve years old." The voice I suddenly remembered from my childhood.

"Well, that's two years older than the last time you saw me, Uncle Mason." Tyler comments back at him just as I reach them.
