CHAPTER FIVE

Xavier's discomfort grew as he thought about Maxwell's words. The man was undeniably attractive, and Xavier was certain no woman could resist him. But Maxwell's frequent visits to Nikita's room, his familiarity with her, made Xavier uneasy. He couldn't explain why he cared about what happened to her. Maybe it was because she saved his life. But once she recovered, he would return to his aloof self, and Nikita would be just a distant memory.

Nikita's readmission to the hospital brought Xavier to her bedside, where he gazed at her sleeping form. "You're just so stubborn, aren't you? You should have just stayed in the hospital," he said, his voice laced with frustration.

Temin and Wyatt, concerned about Nikita's condition, arrived at the hospital and hesitated at the door, seeing Xavier inside. "What's going on?" Temin asked, her eyes fixed on Xavier.

"Is he really sitting close to her?" Wyatt asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Much more, looking at her," Temin replied, her eyes narrowing. "Does he even know we exist? I'm not so sure he would let us see her."

Wyatt nodded, and they decided to wait in the lobby. "Men like him are bound to leave at some point," Wyatt said, dragging Temin away.

Xavier continued to speak to Nikita's sleeping form, his words a mix of frustration and concern. "Why did you run into the car? Why didn't you just ignore me? Why did you refuse to stay in the hospital and come back home? Why do you make me uncomfortable?"

His phone rang, breaking the silence. Maxwell's voice was on the other end. "You're needed at the office."

Xavier's response was curt. "Why?"

"The board members want to have a meeting with you. Probably because of the dead body found in your office," Maxwell said, his tone neutral.

Xavier's eyes flashed with anger. "I don't have time to meet them."

"They are questioning your position," Maxwell replied, his voice firm.

Xavier shot up from the bed, his face red with rage. "Those bastards. What do they know?!" he yelled, his voice echoing through the hospital room. "I'm on my way there, not one of them should move a muscle."

Without a glance back, he stormed out of the room, leaving Maxwell watching from the doorway, a knowing glint in his eye.

"Moron" Maxwell muttered, shaking his head in disbelief as he walked into the hospital room, shutting the door behind him with a soft click. His eyes scanned the space, landing on Nikita's bed, where she lay looking pale and fragile. "Look how uncomfortable the bed is," he said, his voice filled with concern, as he adjusted the bed to a more comfortable position.

Meanwhile, Temin and Wyatt, who had been watching from the hallway, saw Xavier storm out of the room and came back to check on Nikita. "Let's see her," Temin said, rushing into the hospital room, her eyes fixed on Nikita's bed.

But they were startled to find Maxwell standing beside the bed, his eyes fixed on Nikita with a mixture of concern and affection. "Oh my gosh!" they exclaimed in unison, their eyes wide with surprise.

Temin turned to Wyatt, her eyes narrowing. "I thought you said you saw him leave," she said, pinching Wyatt's arm.

Wyatt rubbed his arm, his eyes wide. "Ouch, I definitely saw him leave," he said, his voice laced with confusion.

Maxwell's eyes locked on Temin and Wyatt, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "And who are you?" he asked, his voice firm but curious.

Temin's eyes flashed with determination. "We should be asking you that!" she said, her voice firm. "You aren't Niki's husband, so why are you here?!"
