CHAPTER SIXTEEN
The date with Nikita had come to an abrupt end, her sudden headache putting a damper on the evening's festivities. Xavier couldn't help but feel a twinge of disappointment, his mind fixated on the one thing he hadn't accomplished - the kiss. Damon's cheat sheet echoed in his mind, "A date isn't complete without a kiss." He couldn't argue with that. The evening had been going so well, with laughter and conversation flowing effortlessly. But now, as they walked into the house from the driveway in silence, Xavier couldn't help but feel like he had missed an opportunity.
Damon, sensing something was amiss, bombarded Xavier with questions as soon as he entered the house. "Did it work? Wow, you look like you enjoyed yourself!" he exclaimed, playfully hitting Xavier on the arm.
Xavier pushed him away, a hint of frustration in his voice. "I take back what I said about you being a pro." He shook his head, his eyes fixed on Nikita as she walked into the house, her expression still subdued.
Damon's face contorted in confusion. "Why? What went wrong? Whatever it is, I think it's your fault," he teased, his eyes gleaming with mischief.
Xavier sighed, his shoulders sagging in defeat. "The movie was a disappointment. Why did you include that?" he asked, his voice laced with disappointment.
As he walked into his room, he couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. Nikita had been distant since her phone call, her usual spark missing. He hoped everything was okay. He sat on his bed, removing his tie, and was about to loosen his collar when Nikita walked in, her eyes fixed on him. Xavier's face brightened, his heart skipping a beat. Maybe the date wasn't over yet, his mind whispered. Maybe there was still a chance to make it right.
"Can I come in?" she asked, her voice hesitant, standing by the door.
Xavier got up from the bed, his eyes locked onto hers. "It isn't your first time here. Come in," he said, his tone soft, inviting.
Nikita stepped into the room, her eyes fixed on his, a hint of sadness in her gaze. "Hm, I think it'll probably be my last," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. She dropped a file on the bed, similar to the one she had handed him during their spat in his office.
Xavier's heart sank, his mind racing with the implications. "What's this?" he asked, fearing to pick it up, his eyes fixed on the file.
"The divorce papers," she replied, her voice matter-of-fact.
Xavier's eyes widened in surprise. "But, I thought everything was sorted out," he said, his voice laced with disbelief.
Nikita shrugged. "Yes. That's why I'm handing it to you. Remember our initial deal? I help you catch the mysterious caller and then we go our separate ways. It was bound to happen, why are you looking all surprised?" she asked, her eyes searching his face.
Xavier's mind raced as he tried to process the situation. "So, what do you want me to do?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Nikita's expression was straightforward. "What do people normally do when they hand them divorce papers? You sign them," she said, her voice firm.
Xavier hesitated, trying to make up excuses. "I can't do that now. When the time is right," he said, his eyes avoiding hers.
Nikita's patience was wearing thin. "When's the right time?" she asked, her voice laced with impatience.
Xavier's eyes darted around the room, searching for an escape. "When I get everything sorted out with my Mother. You know, the board members and all that," he said, his voice weak.
Nikita's expression was unyielding. "Okay. You sign it whenever you can, but I'm leaving today," she said, her voice firm. With that, she turned to leave, her eyes fixed on the door, her back straight, and her shoulders squared.
