Excitement crackled through the classroom as Ms. Lee finished writing in her notebook. With a grin, she announced, "Guess what? Since graduation is right around the corner, we're taking a trip to South Korea for one last hurrah!" The room exploded with cheers and questions.
"Seoul, here we come!" the class president shouted, his voice bouncing with excitement.
Yumi, my classmate who's always full of energy, squealed, "Oh my gosh, maybe I'll even run into Sunoo!" Her eyes sparkled with the same dream every ENGENE in the room shared – a chance encounter with their K-pop idols.
"Jina, imagine meeting ENHYPEN! Maybe you'll snag a date with Jungwon!" Yumi nudged me playfully, a mischievous wink accompanying the suggestion.
No secret here – Yumi, Emi, and I were all huge K-pop fans, with each of us having a different favorite group. South Korea had always held a special place in our hearts.
Beyond the K-pop craze, the country's amazing culture and beautiful scenery had called to us for ages.
Now, thanks to this surprise trip, that dream was finally coming true. A tiny wave of disappointment washed over me when Ms. Lee asked, "Anyone here speak Korean?"
A hand shot up from the back – Ari, another K-pop fan, though a bit on the intense side.
Her one true love in K-pop? BTS.
Anyone who dared to disagree with her claims of being Jungkook's eternal girlfriend faced her wrath. Let's just say, Ari wasn't exactly the most popular. Her limited Korean skills didn't help either.
When Ms. Lee, completely unaware of Ari's true abilities, clapped happily after her shy "Annyeonghaseyo" (hello), Yumi and I exchanged a secret smile, barely stifling a giggle.
"Just three days," Ms. Lee announced, a smile hinting at the excitement brewing. "Three short days until we land in the heart of South Korea! Pack your bags for a two-week adventure – we're going to soak up all its awesomeness!" A surprised gasp echoed through the room, quickly replaced by a flurry of excited whispers.
Ivy, ever the practical one, leaned towards me, a hint of disbelief lingering in her voice. "Wait, are we really doing this? Is this some elaborate senior prank?" Hana, brows furrowed in concentration, struggled to remember a name.
"Yumi, Jina, maybe you'll meet your... what was it again?"
"ENHYPEN," I offered with a shrug.
A mischievous glint sparked in Emi's eyes as she perched on my desk. "Imagine running into Stray Kids themselves!"
Fingers already flying across her phone, Ivy piped up, "Alright, packing time! Who's got outfit inspiration?"
Hana, a picture of indecision, chewed on her gum, one leg slung over the chair in front of her. "Ugh, I have no idea what to pack!"
"Hold on," Emi interjected, applying lip gloss. "Does Ari actually speak Korean? Or is it just a few words for her favorite K-pop stars?" Yumi shook her head with a slight smirk.
"Just a few words, I'm afraid." I offered a confirming nod. Ivy, brushing a strand of hair from her face, tilted her head in thought.
"Wait a minute, you two can speak Korean, right?"
"A little," I admitted, a blush creeping up my neck. "But not nearly as good as Yumi."
Just then, Ms. Lee's voice cut through the chatter. "Alright everyone, form groups of five. That'll be your crew for the trip." She shuffled through her notes, a satisfied smile gracing her lips.
"Group time!" Emi declared, a playful glint mirroring Ms. Lee's.
"Me too!" Ivy chimed in, excitement erasing her initial skepticism.
