You're a lonely soul
'Cause you won't let go of anything you hold

My fingers tightly gripped the handle of Dad's blue camaro as we passed a green sign on the side of the road. Its white words welcomed us to Mystic Falls, meaning we had finally crossed the borders.

We were on our way to my new home. A temporary home, to be specific. That has always been my life. Moving from city to town or reversed. Changing houses, names, addresses. Changing lives.

I wore my names like I wore my clothes. They were a form of a mask that hid my true identity.

Dad and I had been on the road for more than a week now since we had to cross the whole country to reach our destination. However, this also meant it had been more than seven days since we left Los Angeles.

At that memory, I gripped the handle even harder, making my knuckles turn white.

"If you squeeze it even tighter, you'll tear it off," Dad warned me.

"Sorry," I said without looking at him and let go. He didn't reply.

Instead of thinking about LA, my mind wandered back to Mystic Falls. I'd never visited that little town before. The only way I could encounter it was through dad's tales from when he was younger and the place was freshly built. He used to tell me about his past life. About his brother Stefan, his love Katherine and his parents. He always refused to talk about his father though. Mostly, I heard stories about his mother who died when he was still very young and his memories were vague. However, Katherine was another person he liked to talk to me about. I remembered how he used to promise to me that one day the three of us would be a complete family. But that was years ago and his quest to save her from a tomb remained unfinished. Maybe this time he would succeed. Maybe this time he would finally find a way to make his promises come true. I was aware that there wasn't a day when he wouldn't tire his brain with his attempts to come up with a solution to open the tomb.

But Katherine wasn't the only reason why we were coming to Mystic Falls. She might be a part of it but Stefan was the one who triggered this situation. When Dad discovered that his brother would be returning to their hometown, he could not miss the opportunity. I didn't even fully know what his intentions were once they reunited. All I knew is that the two brothers have been fighting since 1864 which was the year that changed everything. The year they turned into vampires.

Yes, my dad was a vampire. No, we were not biologically related.

It all began almost sixteen years ago when Dad was walking in a small town in the evening. Around that time, his humanity was turned off but then he came across a vampire who was viciously feeding on a man. The vampire ran away. However, he was too late to save the injured man – my biological dad. And the last word he uttered right before his eyes went blank was my name: Clara. After that he found me in a stroller and Damon's humanity somehow turned on.
