Later that night Dad took me home and then left once again to search for Vicki with Stefan. And many hours had passed since then. I didn't get any information but I knew that in daytime Vicki couldn't go out which was at least a little comforting with all these circumstances.

However, my powers, magic or whatever it was got even more restless. As if that dream with Emily Bennett unlocked it and let it flow out like water without any chance to put a lid over it. For example, today I wanted to pour myself water but the liquid ended up splashing me in the face. The lights also kept playing with me and they were a constant reminder of the mess I was in.

And I still hadn't told Dad about any of this. Somehow, the more I waited, the less I wanted to reveal it to him. Last night I was really about to do it but then we got cut off by that gunshot.

Only later Dad finally visited me at home.

"Did you find Vicki?" I asked him as soon as he stepped inside because I had been warned by the sound of his keys in the door.

"Hello to you, too," he said. "Stefan is now playing the role of her teacher."

I sighed in relief. "Thank God."

"But we've got another problem."

"What problem?"

"Stefan was curious about why you were there with me that night."

I sat down. "What did you tell him?"

"Definitely not the truth."

"What does that mean?"

"Let's just say," he said as he started to walk toward his shelf with the bottles of alcohol, "that you should wear scarves from now on."

"No..." I shook my head in disbelief. "You didn't. Tell me you didn't."

He came back with a bottle and pulled out a glass which was full in a matter of seconds. "I had no other choice. This was something he'd believe. Now that Caroline's not in my power, I needed someone else to feed on."

"And I was your first choice."

He took a big gulp of his drink. "It's better than him knowing the truth."

I got up from my seat. "And tell me, why would it be such a huge problem if he knew the truth? We wouldn't have to pretend in front of him. Our lives would be so much easier."
