Keefe gulped when the hood came down.
The Council hadn't warned him that he'd be watching the interrogation of his mom.
They only said he'd be watching a questioning of a Neverseen member.
He felt Sophie squeeze his hand. Keefe had told Sophie she didn't have to be there, but now Keefe was glad she was. He didn't think he would be able to stay standing without her.
Keefe clenched his jaw as his mother's scarred face turned to him, a sick smile on her lips.
"How nice to see you son-"
"Don't call me that." Keefe growled. "You lost that right years ago."
"Tsk, tsk. You'll learn eventually." Gisela's eyes shifted to Sophie.
"How wonderful that the Moonlark is here too! I'm guessing you're here for my son?"
Sophie stepped forward threateningly. "He said Don't. Call. Him. That."
The amount of anger radiating off of her surprised Keefe. It was almost more than Keefe's own hatred.
"Feisty. I'm just here to answer a few questions, right? Let's get on with that shall we?" Gisela shifted in her seat, pain flashing across her face. "Though, these bonds are quite uncomfortable."
"Good." Keefe heard Sophie mutter under her breath.
He couldn't help smiling. He had never been more grateful than right then that Sophie had argued the council for the right to come. Keefe had a feeling he didn't want to admit to that this was going to be hard.
One of the guards-a goblin- assigned to questioning Gisela stepped forward, a hand resting on his sword. He asked questions that the Black Swan already knew the answers to, and would supply the answers if the council would trust them. But of course, they wouldn't.
Gisela avoided the questions, dodging them in a way where she answered, but was so vague that everything she never said something Keefe or Sophie didn't know.
Keefe could feel Sophie's frustration rising, along with his own. Keefe wanted desperately to say something, but if he did, he would be dragged out of the cell.
Sophie went onto her tip-toes, leaning into Keefe. "I can break into her mind if you want me to." She whispered.
Keefe felt her frustration dissolve into concern as she studied him. "I appreciate the offer, Foster, but if you do that we'll both get kicked out of here. And my mom is good at hiding things, from both empaths and telepaths."
"Fine." Sophie huffed. "But the offer stands. And I could totally slip in without anyone knowing."
"I know Foster." Keefe squeezed her hand.
Sophie paused, watching the guard continue interrogating Gisela. Then she continued talking to him.
"You know I'll always stand by you, right? You can count on me for whatever. Even if you need company if you end up walking through hell, I'll walk through it with you." Sophie glanced up at him.
"Thanks, Foster. You always have the best pep talks."
"I know."
The guard turned to them with a blank expression. "The questioning is done. You must leave now while we move the prisoner to an altered cell."
A different guard ushered them out of the room, right on their heels.
Sophie threw her arms up in the air out of exasperation. "We got nothing out of that! Nothing! What are they going to do with any of that useless information?"
"I'm not sure. But we'll figure it out. We always do."
Sophie sighed as they walked out of the dungeons.
"It's fine Foster. We will figure it out." He rubbed her shoulder reassuringly.
"We have to." Keefe added quietly.
Shoutout to Greenbean_123ean for suggesting the song Stand By You by Rachel Plattin to base a oneshot off of! It really is a Sokeefe song.
