Author's Note - Written by Mercy Monster and with art from her originally on the blog this was the backstory for how Papyrus broke and it is seemingly canon to the Au. Found on Amino of all places I have added in the pictures along with the story of Papyrus. The amino was originally in a different language so I went into translation and reverted it back to English.

After Frisk's route through the Underground ended with Toriel crowned as queen, the human hunting initiative was terminated. With this change in policy, Undyne finally relented and allowed Papyrus to officially join the ranks of the Kingsguard!

Due to his brilliant rapport with the human (she was his best friend, after all) and his own merits, Papyrus was a benchmark for the newly created position of royal bodyguard

Due to his brilliant rapport with the human (she was his best friend, after all) and his own merits, Papyrus was a benchmark for the newly created position of royal bodyguard. It was Papy's job to protect and guide Frisk when Toriel couldn't.

Sans, while happy that his brother got his dream job, wasn't too thrilled at the prospect of him being around the human. No matter how many pleas and discreet threats Sans made to Undyne for Paps' position to move somewhere far from the human one, the fish captain was immovable. Their relationship, while still friendly on Papy's face, was quite strained. Seeing how Undyne wouldn't put Papyrus anywhere else, Sans decided to open a hot dog stand in New Home to keep an eye on his brother.

Frisk, however, didn't remember much about the aborted genocide. She didn't understand Sans's fervent dislike of her (she could see in his black eye sockets when Paps wasn't looking that he hated her, and he scared her), but Papyrus always took her mind off of her with unconditional love and encouragement. . He was her best friend and was so patient and understanding with her. It's not hard to believe that young Frisk had a crush on him for quite some time.

It was Paps' encouragement and her own determination that led Frisk to heal the rift between her and Sans. She wanted to understand why he hated her so much, why he thought so little of her, and she wanted to change his mind.
When she confronted Sans about it, he let years of anxiety and anger overwhelm her rationality and reason, and he lashed out at her.

In the end, when Sans had seen her soul and felt the connection they shared, he had taken her back to his place where Papyrus could heal the damage he had done ("Don't overdo it, Papy! It's okay, really! I just slipped off a cliff. You know me, a total disaster!")
