"Growing up without my father weighed heavy on my brain..."

Ma had tears rolling down her face

As we were left alone

With nothing but

Me and her.

From that moment,

It was always us alone.

From every new dawn

To every waning dusk,

The echoes of my father dimmed

The stars.

I longed for something new,

Something away,

Away from the pain of my past.

I fled Rhode Island willingly to join the Union force

In an attempt to escape the dread of home.

To live the life I always wanted,

To live as my father never did.
