Nicci
"You need to stop playin' for I lay this hammer on you." I laughed and shook my head quietly as I walked up the block towards my mom's house. "You ain't gone do shit nigga. Lay the hammer down my ass you gone get up there and lay yo black ass the fuck down. Eat these fuckin' yams nigga."
"Ight this too much," I said. I couldn't even unpinch my face.
"Nicciiiiiii!" My mom jumped to run off the porch and hug me so tight. "I missed you Baby Doll. You look tired. You been eating?"
My mom started pulling at my clothes and I rolled my eyes.
"You know I been eating Mama— Don't get them ashes on my clothes man, I'm fresh. I missed you. How you been? Who this man?"
She laughed and cupped my face to kiss my cheek. "Nicci come here," she pulled me up the steps by the wrist.
"This is your father." My jaw could have hit the ground. My father? My father. Last I heard my father ain't made no effort to see me since I was two. And was only coming around to argue with my mom about getting Naliya straight and whatever the hell else.
"Interesting. Wassup. Mama, I need to talk to you. I'm thirsty," I said flatly on my way inside. I got myself a bottle of Sunny D and plopped down on the couch and listened to them wrap up outside.
"I'll talk to her. I'll see you later?"
"Tuh!" I said while rolling my eyes before drinking my drink and switching the TV on.
"You gone hit me?"
"You know I am."
"Do I get some love before I go or I gotta beg for the shit?""Beg," my mom laughed as I turned the TV up to cover the sound of their goodbye.
My mom opened the screen door and he said, "I love you Gwendolyn." She smiled and rushed back outside and I turned the TV up even louder.
When my mom finally came inside she closed the door and snatched the remote out of my hand to turn the TV off.
"What's your deal Nicole?"
"My deal? I ain't even know who that man was out there... and you out there all over him. And you wanna come in here and ask me what's my deal?"
"Damn, I ain't know the New York water was toxic like that. Come on baby we got to getchu to the ER before you get any worse," my mom rolled her eyes while grabbing my hand and I just snatched it back.
"Better check that fuckin' attitude. Don't know who the fuck you thought you was comin' up in here talkin' to like that," she said while crossing her legs and lighting her up another smoke.
I rolled my eyes and sighed, "I'm sorry Ma... that shit just caught me off guard."
"And you gone cuss at me?"
"I ain't cuss at you, Ma!"
"You was supposed to be out there rubbing off on Tré... not the other way around."
"I barely get the chance to rub on her let alone rub off on her," I mumbled while rolling my eyes and getting up to go up to my old room but my mom pulled me back down.
"And what's that supposed to mean?" My mom asked while ashing her smoke and I just shook my head.
"Listen... I know you must be real surprised to find out about me and your dad. But I'm still your Mama. You can still talk to me Baby Doll," my mom said.
I took the deepest breath. "Me and Tré... we been going through something lately. I'm not even sure I really know what's going on. But I feel like I'm losing her all over again, Ma," I admitted and watched my mom wear empathy.
