"What!"
"Justin's coming back to Canada," Ryan said as he sat down on the couch trying to regulate his breathing.
"Why the hell did he come back? He said he was going to London. He should have stayed there forever," the girl set her son on the table to change his diaper.
"He was only gone for a year, An."
"But he had no reason to go back! I'll have to move cities, or countries..." she said hurriedly.
"Take it easy. It's not that bad," he tried to hold back a laugh as he watched the little boy frown at his mother's lack of touch.
"It's not that bad? That bastard took advantage of me," she huffed, picked up her son and walked to the small kitchen. Ryan followed her.
"An, at least let him explain things to you," the blond demanded taking the baby in his arms while the girl prepared a bottle.
"Explain what, that his parents pulled a gun on him so he would tell me that our relationship was a game?"
"Of course not, but..."
"But what, Ryan? If he said it, it means he thought about it; and if he thought about it, then he felt it," she took her baby back in her arms to feed him.
"An, I've known Justin since I was six. I know he loves you deeply. Just give him a chance. Give yourself a chance to clear things up."
Anne sighed. "Okay. I'll listen to him," the blond smiled making her roll her eyes. "But he won't go near Jason."
"Sooner or later he'll know he's his son." He needs to know, he thought.
"Better late."
"You're so stubborn," he smiled.
The girl rolled her eyes again. "When is he supposed to arrive?"
"Today. He spoke to me a few minutes ago from the airport. He'll be here in at least half an hour."***
"Yeah, I arrived safely... No, I'm already on my way to my hometown...", the brunette was saying over the phone while opening the door of the cab in front of him. He looked at the small, shabby looking shop again, which emphasized John's on the front. He sighed. Finding answers was harder than he had expected.
"Are you going to your parents' house?" a female voice asked from the other side of the speaker bringing him back to reality. He got into the cab and closed the car door.
"No. I'm staying at a friend's house, but I'm going to see Anne first," he replied pulling the piece of paper with the address Ryan had dictated from his pocket. He smiled as he looked at it.
"Why don't you forget her once and for all!" the girl ranting. The cab driver momentarily glanced at him through the rear view mirror and hid a little smile.
"Katherine, you're a great friend, but, as I told you before, it can't be, you and me. You know about my feelings for her."
"Anne, my angel, An.... That's all you say. Please understand she doesn't love you. You'll get hurt again, Justin. Forget her already. You need to think about your future and leave that wayward girl behind. Your parents have sacrificed too much for you to throw it all away for that one."
Justin tensed his jaw. "It's not that simple. You never have and never will be able to understand. Please, I ask you again to be respectful with your words. She's not just anyone, by now, you should know that."
A frustrated huff came out of her mouth. "When she dumps you and you realize you made a mistake, call me," she stated and hung up. The brunette sighed. He hated to be so harsh with her, but he needed her to understand. He didn't want to hurt her. And he wasn't going to tolerate someone talking about his angel like that either.
"Where should I take you?" the driver asked.
***"How dare you give him my address!" the brunette was muttering as she went through her apartment looking for every toy and baby accessory in sight. She only had a few minutes to hide them in her room.
" You have to talk and this was the only way you would agree and wouldn't run away," Ryan was saying while playing with little Jason. The girl felt like strangling him for how calm he was acting, did he not realize what he had done?
"We could go to a Starbucks or some park. I don't want him anywhere near my son."
"He's his son, too."
"Of course not. I was the one who took care of the expenses during and after the pregnancy, the one who has always been there for him. I'm the one who takes care of him when he's sick, who rocks him to sleep and wakes up in the middle of the night to feed him. I am the one who pays for his daycare, his milk, diapers and the roof over his head. I am the one he recognizes as his mother and father figure."
"Because he doesn't know of his existence."
"Ryan, you of all people know everything I've been through since Justin left. I don't want all of that to get worse now that we're doing fine," she took a seat next to the blond with one of Jason's toys in her hands.
"That's exactly why I want you to be happy. You deserve to be. All the misunderstandings that happened can be solved, you just have to give him a chance to work it out. I know you still love him, and I know he loves you too."
"It's over between us."
"Don't be stubborn, girl. Tell Mommy not to be stubborn," he said placing Jason in front of his mother. "Jason needs his father too, you can't keep that from him, nor can you deny him the opportunity to get to know his son,"the little boy smiled, showing his gums to the girl. She loved that little smile. Just as Anne was about to take him into her arms, a knock at the door was heard.
"It's him," she said flustered.
"Take it easy, An. It's going to be all right."
"Yeah, sure," she took her son in her arms in a hurry and led him to her room.Ryan sighed. It was time. He made his way to the door and opened it, finding the imposing figure of his old friend made into a nervous jelly. Just like her, he thought.
"Justin, bro," he smiled and hugged the brunette.
"I never thought I'd be so happy to see you, butsy," he sighed as he returned the hug. They both laughed.
"How was your flight?" he asked leading his friend inside the small apartment.
"Fine. A little tiring," he looked around the small area. "Where is she?" he asked. He needed to see her. Every fiber of his being was filled with the impatience of having her in front of him, to smell her and to be able to feel the warm radiating from her body.Just then, the girl appeared down a hallway. Her bravery completely vanished when she saw him. Her heart began to pound so fast she could feel the rumbling in her ears. It was unfair that, after all she had been through, he still had that effect on her.
"Anne..."
"Ju... Justin..."
