[AGE NINE]
"Mum, Dad! Tae is here!" You excitedly chirp, running into the living room. Ever since your dad announced that he had invited his friend, the Kim family, over for the holidays, you could not hold your excitement.
"Y/N! Look at the state of you!" Your mother's voice cuts through your excitement like a knife. "Your hair is a mess, and your dress! Oh lord, you silly girl. What am I going to do with you?" She paces around, fretting, while you stand there, bewildered, staring at yourself. "What will the guests say when they see you like this?"
Messy, uncombed hair. Stained t-shirt and baggy shorts. You glance down at your muddy hands and sigh absentmindedly.
Mum is right! I can't go in front of my Tae looking like this!
On most days, you wouldn't have cared. You would much rather be learning how to shape clay into intricate figures with Grandma Anne than listening to your mother nagging about your appearance.
If anything, your mother's "how to be a lady" lessons taught you that a girl shouldn't get her hands dirty with uncivilized activities, as she loved to put it. Apparently, a young lady should steer clear of anything deemed too rough or uncouth.
"Oh look at my lovely girl," Your head snaps at your mother's sudden sweet voice. Knowing very well that it cannot be directed to you, your head turns to the source of her happy mood.
Ila Sorve. Your twin.
With a sweet smile and an even sweeter demeanour, she descends in her baby pink dress, her hair neatly slicked back into a low ponytail. Most importantly, she radiates freshness, her skin clean and clear, devoid of any trace of dried clay that might mar her porcelain skin unlike yours.
"Why couldn't you be more like your sister?" Mrs Sorve sighs. ''I don't know where I went wrong?''
Sister. Not twin.
Your brows furrow slightly. But you quickly push the negative thoughts away and happily run off to your room.
"Hey! Where are you going, young lady?!" You hear her scream but you couldn't care less. Nothing will ruin your mood today.
Because he is coming.
Kim Taehyung.
'You made that?'
You nod, shame and fear of rejection dawning in your conscious. You close your eyes, hiding the clay vase behind you.
'That's beautiful!'
Your eyes fly open, searching his face with a mix of surprise and hope. 'You think? But Mama said it's messy.'
'Messy things can be beautiful too.'
By the time, you finish cleaning up after yourself, you hear the bell ring. Quickly finishing up, you almost squeal when you grab the nicely wrapped gift box you've been hiding from everyone for the past few days.
"What's that?"
You gasp before instinctively hiding the box behind you. "Oh, Ila!"
"Why are you hiding that?!" Your sister curiously asks.
"It's nothing!" You frown.
"Is that for me?!"
"No!" You step away before she can snatch it. "It's not for you!"
"Then?"
You sigh, giving up. You can trust your twin, after all, she's the only person who always seems to be on your side. "Don't tell Mama!"
She nods eagerly. ''Pinky promise!''
You shyly reveal the box. "It's for Tae."
"It is?"
You nod, a giddy grin taking over your face. "But I'm too shy to give it to him." You pout.
Your sister shakes her head violently. "Don't be silly, he will love it! What's in there?"
You shake your head. "What if he doesn't?" You sigh. An idea sparks your head before you abruptly hold onto your twin. "Ila, help me!"
"Help with what?"
"Can you give it to him for me?!"
