Maya got up noisily because her alarm clock had broken.

she left her room to have breakfast.

- Hi Mom.

She went off to cuddle her mother, then began toasting a slice of bread.

- Jonathan! Hurry up, you've got to bring Maya and Will.

- I'm going by bike.

- Okay, but not too late.

Maya had already dressed and was ready to leave, taking her bag and the leather jacket that had belonged to her mother before.

- I'm off, love Mum.

She left the house and got on her bike, put her headphone on her head and put on Another One Bites To Dust by Queen.

She arrived at the school, put her bike away and started to cross the road to enter the school grounds when she saw a car coming at full speed and almost run her over, she collapsed to the ground, the only thing she saw was a young red-haired girl arguing with the driver then running towards Maya, who had just fainted.

Waking up lying on a bed, she noticed that she was in the infirmary; the girl she'd seen wasn't there.

- What had happened?

- You fainted after nearly getting run over, so it's a good thing someone brought you here.

Maya stood up and felt that the energy she'd had this morning was completely gone, and she managed to get to class after the bell rang.

As she entered the classroom, she saw Mike, Will's friend, talking to the teacher, and as she passed behind him, she rubbed her hair and laughed.

She sat down in the second-to-last row of the classroom and took out her things, even though she was drawing during class.

Suddenly, someone opened the door: the principal, accompanied by a girl. Maya noticed it was the same girl who had helped her and smiled, but she didn't answer.

- This must be our new student.

She was about to sit down when the teacher called her over.

- Just a moment. You won't get away with this. Come on, don't be shy.

She moves to the side of the desk.

- Dustin, drum roll.

Dustin started banging on his filing cabinet as if it were an instrument.

- Welcome, everyone, from California. The latest passenger to join our journey of curiosity, Maxine.
- It's Max.
- Sorry?
- Nobody calls me Maxine, it's Max.

After this rather lengthy introduction, Max took a seat at the back, just behind Maya.

Will and his friends turned to the news, shocked, Maya did not do the same to avoid appearing to be a psychopath.

The end of class came, Maya packed up her things and went out to the playground and sat down on a bench to listen to music.

She couldn't stop watching Max chained up figures on her skateboard. Maya thought she's cool and stylish not just because she's a stakeboarder, no, for Maya she's got an energy she'd never seen before.

But Maya was afraid to go and talk to her to thank her for helping her.

After a moment's hesitation, she got up and went to see Max.

- Hi, Max, right?

- Yes, hi.

- My name's Maya.

- Nice to meet you, what do you want? Are you spying on me too?

- No, not at all, I just wanted to say thank you for helping me this morning.

- Ah, it's you, the one who nearly got run over by my brother. Sorry, he was pissed off this morning and when he drives he goes really fast.
