Maya woke up after having a nightmare, went into the living room and saw that no one was there. She decided to go back to sleep on the sofa, but she couldn't get back to sleep. She didn't know why, but Max haunted her mind, and she couldn't go a second without thinking of her, though she persisted in trying to sleep.

- Did you sleep here?

It was Joyce, she didn't seem to be awake yet, but enough to notice Maya here.

- No, I just stood there, having a nightmare.

- Okay, is everything all right?

- Yeah, sure. Can you hand me my Walkman?

She threw the object in question and Maya placed it on her head. Still unable to get Max out of her mind, she sat down, wrapping her arms around her legs, and put on Michael Jackson's Billie Jean.

She watched the sun gradually rise, today she was going to leave for Mike's to play D&D with Dustin, Mike, Lucas and Will.

She grabbed her bike and started pedaling to the Wheeler's house.

She knocked lightly so as not to wake anyone.

- Oh, hi Maya, how are you?

This is Nancy, Mike's sister, who's dating Steve Harrigton, Dustin's new friend.

- Hi, Nancy, where's Mike?

- He's in the basement, playing Dungeons and Dragons today?

- Yes, thank you.

She let the Byers in, Will had slept at the Wheeler's, so he was already here.

- Hello Mrs Wheeler, how are you?

- Yes, and you, Maya?

- I'm fine. Where's Mike?

- He's in the basement.

She ran to the place, down the basement stairs, and greeted the four boys.

They began to play, Will and Maya's first game since the boy's disappearance.

- I'll take you somewhere for lunch.

- Seriously, where?

- It's a surprise, you'll see.

At the end of the game, they left through the basement door, picked up their bikes, and Maya guided them to the place in question.

Once there, the boys noticed they were in the arcade.

- You really took us to the arcade?

- Yeah, why?

- It's so cool.

The boys hugged Maya, she smiled slightly and then they all entered the arcade. Dustin and the others all headed for Dig Dug to try and beat Max's record, even though the boys didn't know that "Madmax" was Max.

Unfortunately, no one was able to beat Maya's friend's famous record, and when Maya wanted to see which arcade he would try next, she saw Max playing in the distance. She weaved her way through the crowd to check on her friend.

- Hi, Max.

- Oh hi, Maya, how are you?

- Well, I'm fine, I came with Will.

She glanced at the archway where Will was standing, noticing Lucas and Mike.

- Are you coming with us?

- Come on.

they joined the boys, and continued to play, although Mike wasn't too keen on her joining in.

After a few hours, Will and Maya had to return home, so they went out to get their bikes, and started riding home.

When they arrived at the house, they put their bikes away and went inside.

- Hi, Mom.

- Hi kids, how was your day?

- It was great, we played Dungeons and Dragons and then Maya took us to the arcade.

After a long day, Maya sneaked into her room to rest.

Unfortunately, after a few minutes Joyce called young Byers over.

- Yes? What is it?

- There's someone on the phone for you.

Joyce handed the phone to her daughter, who realized it was Max.

- Oh hi, Max, how are you?

- I'm fine.

- How did you get my number? At least my house number?

- Dustin gave it to me. I'm sorry I didn't warn you.

- Yeah. Yeah, okay.

- I have a question: today me and Billy had a fight, except my parents aren't here and he evicted me, so can I sleep at your place?

- Uh, sure, sure, come over anytime, don't worry.

- Ok, well I'm coming bye.

Max hung up the phone and Maya left the house, waiting in the rain, hoping she'd arrive soon.

In the distance, she saw the young girl running full speed ahead.

She ran into the young redhead's arms and they both went back into the house.

- Mommy, this is Max, my new friend. Max, this is my mother.

- Nice to meet you, Mrs. Byers.

- Oh, you can call me Joyce.

- I'll call you Joyce.

- Mom, Max is going to spend the night here, do you mind?

- Oh, no, not at all.

On the contrary, she couldn't wait for her daughter to say that; she'd always longed for her to find a friend she could trust.

They made their way to the girl's room, sat down on Maya's bed and started talking.

- You know, if there's the slightest problem with your family or Billy, the doors of the Byers House are always open.

- Thanks, Maya, but why are you being so nice to me? We've only known each other two days, haven't we?

Maya took a deep breath and picked up a pillow to snuggle up against.

- In fact, last year, before you arrived, did you know that Will had disappeared?

- Yes, I'm listening.

- Well, first of all, I was bullied because of my hair.

- But it's so pretty.

- But also because everyone thought I killed Will.

Max took Maya in his arms, she couldn't believe that such a kind and caring person could have gone through all that.

Maya slowly got up from the bed, went outside and began to admire every drop of water falling, Jonathan arriving discreetly without making a sound.

- Is everything alright?

- Oh, I'm fine.

- Are you?

- Yes, I'm just worried about Will, I don't know if he's in good hands at the hospital he's going to.

Jonathan took his sister in his arms, he knew very well that his sister wasn't doing very well at the moment, even if she didn't want to talk about it.

The two siblings went back to their respective rooms, Maya lowered the shutter and tucked herself into her friend's arms as she was very cold. She began to fall asleep slowly, blocked in the warmth of her body.

she realized she'd finally found someone who wouldn't judge her and who loved her for who she was.
