As Jacqueline and Nathan spent the next few hours researching colleges, universities, and even online courses that would take Jacqueline, they felt more and more confident that they could actually do this—start fresh together, no matter who would be left behind.

Jacqueline began drafting a new resume to apply for jobs during college, her determination shining through every keystroke. Meanwhile, Nathan paced his office, dialing a number on his phone. "Jacqueline, I might have something for us; I'll leave the phone on speaker, but you have to stay absolutely silent, okay?"

Jacqueline gave him a thumbs up and continued working on his laptop, refining her resume.

Nathan adjusted his black-rimmed glasses and smoothed down his hair as he settled into his office chair. With a deliberate motion, he dialed the number, waiting as the line connected. "Hey, Kaitlyn," he greeted warmly once she answered. "It's good to hear from you again. I just wanted to clarify—the job offer is in Chicago, correct?"

A cheerful yet slightly cautious voice crackled through the speaker. "Yes, Nathan. The position is based in Chicago. I managed to pull a few strings, and they're willing to schedule an interview ASAP. Just so you know, though, you might be under close watch until they're certain you can be trusted. It's the same grade level, but are you comfortable with teaching History?"

Nathan nodded to himself, processing the information. "Yes, that sounds great," he replied, his voice confident despite the hint of nerves. "When's the interview?"

Kaitlyn's tone brightened. "Great! They're aiming for as soon as next week, but are willing to wait up to a month out. I'll send you the details once everything's confirmed. You're going to do great, Nathan. They're lucky to have you considering your experience."

"Thanks, Kaitlyn. I appreciate your support," Nathan said sincerely, a small smile playing on his lips. "This means a lot considering my situation here."

"How's Claire?" Kaitlyn asked, her voice tinged with concern and a hint of hope.

Nathan's expression faltered briefly before he replied, "I wish I could tell you more, honestly, but they haven't found anything yet. I just hope Claire's okay."

Kaitlyn sighed deeply, sadness seeping into her voice. "Despite our differences, I do love my little sister... I just hope she ran away with some guy like she did in high school. This must be so scary for you, Nathan."

Nathan rubbed his neck nervously, feeling a bead of sweat form on his hand. He stumbled over his words, hoping Kaitlyn would change the subject soon. "I hope so too. I, uh, don't know if Claire told you, but we got divorced, so... yeah."

Kaitlyn's concern deepened. "I'm sorry to hear that, Nathan. I hope things get better for you soon."

"Thanks," Nathan replied, trying to sound optimistic despite the weight of the conversation. "Let's hope for good news on both fronts."

"Absolutely," Kaitlyn agreed, her voice gentle. "Keep me updated on everything, okay?"

"I will," Nathan promised, grateful for Kaitlyn's support during this uncertain time.

As Nathan hung up the phone, he leaned back in his chair, removing his glasses and placing them on the table. Jacqueline, who had been sitting across from him, stood up and walked over to his side, kneeling beside him.

"Nathan, was that Claire's sister?" Jacqueline's voice trembled with fear. "What does she know?"

Nathan sighed deeply, turning his chair slightly to face her. "Yeah, that was Kaitlyn Valdez, Claire's older sister. But please, don't worry. Kaitlyn doesn't know anything about the blood found in the park. Claire and Kaitlyn never really got along."
