The rain was coming down in sheets, drumming a steady rhythm against the window pane. It was the kind of night that made you want to curl up with a good book and a hot drink, but I was far from relaxed. George sat opposite me, his face tight with disapproval, a mug of lukewarm coffee untouched between his hands.
"I don't know, Lockwood," he said, his voice clipped. "It's just... risky. Bringing someone new in, especially someone with... her background."
I ran a hand through my hair, feeling the familiar prickle of frustration. I'd been over this with him countless times, but he just wouldn't budge.
"She's not a burden, George. She's got skills. A lot of them, actually."
"Skills that probably won't do us any good,' he retorted, his gaze hardening. 'We're barely scraping by as it is, two of us. Adding another mouth to feed?" He shook his head. 'It's just not practical.'
'We're an agency, George. We're supposed to help people. And she needs help. She could be a valuable asset. We just need to give her a chance."
'And what if she's a liability? What if she screws things up? We could lose everything." His voice rose, sharp with worry. "We've built this up, Lockwood. Two years of hard work, blood and sweat. I'm not letting some... troubled kid jeopardize it.'
His words stung. I knew it was the worry talking, but it felt like he was dismissing her, and by extension, my judgment. I'd seen the potential in her, the raw talent hidden under a layer of bravado and sarcasm.
"She's not troubled, George. She just needs a chance, someone to believe in her."
He sighed, the tension in his shoulders palpable. 'Look, I know you think you can help her, but I just don't see it. It's too risky, Lockwood. We can't afford to take a chance like that.'
Frustration simmered within me. I needed to find a way to convince him, to make him see what I saw in her.
"It's a trial, George. A trial period. If she doesn't work out, we can let her go. But we owe it to her to try."
He stared at me, his expression unreadable. The silence stretched, thick with unspoken anxieties. I knew I wasn't going to win him over tonight, but I wouldn't give up. This was about more than just helping her; it was about proving to George that I could see beyond the surface, that I could make good decisions, even risky ones. The rain continued to pound against the window, a persistent reminder that the future, like the weather, was unpredictable. And maybe, just maybe, we could weather the storm together, all three of us.
