I'm afraid we have some bad news Cam

Chapter Summary:

Cam is excited about his brother coming home on leave from the Army, his brother's always been supportive of his career choice. On the day that his brother is due to come home Cam is at work when he receives the sad news that his brother has been killed during an ambush whilst they were on patrol, his brothers army dog Magic was injured but survived.

Cam say's he doesn't want to take the dog and disappears for part of his shift, Jan finds him sitting in the rain outside the ambulance base and brings him into the warm so they can talk.

Will Cam change his mind about taking his brother's army dog.

Cam's POV:

I remember the last time I saw my brother when I waved him goodbye at the army base as he was deployed to Afghanistan and I had no idea of when he would be back and if I'm honest I was scared for him. A whole year had passed and finally the news I'd waited for came at the end of last month that my brother was coming home on leave and I couldn't wait to spend some time with him and we had so much to catch up on. 

Today was the day that my brother Jake was coming home I'd sent him a message letting him know I was working this morning but he could meet me at the hospital when I finished my shift, I arrived at work and made my way into the staff room where Jodie and Rida were sat having breakfast I hung my coat up and joined them to have my breakfast, Jodie looked at me and the massive smile I had on my face and said 'Your looking very happy this morning Cam my love'. 

I smiled at Jodie we were both in love with each-other and enjoying our relationship I realised I hadn't replied I cleared my throat and said 'My brother Jake is coming home on leave from the army today for a few weeks, I haven't seen him since he left years ago'. Jodie took hold of my left hand and said 'Oh Cam that must have been so hard to not have seen him since he left, is he going to come and meet you here after your shift has finished' I nodded and said 'Yeah I texted him but he hasn't replied yet he's probably travelling so his phone will be off'.

The shift started with patients being bought in after an accident at a Circus, there were some devastating injuries including burns and someone who had been impaled there was also a young girl who had been injured when the crowds ran from the big top her mother was stood outside resus watching us get her daughter comfortable. Dylan asked me to go and speak to the mother so I walked out of resus and over to where she was stood, the mother stood up and said 'Mrs Peters my names Cam I'm one of the nurses looking after your daughter Rosie. I know it looks serious but most of her injuries are superficial we're just keeping her in because of her broken ribs but they will heal nicely on there own, you can come in and sit with her if you'd like'.

I left the mum sat with her daughter and left resus to go and get a drink from the staff room I sat down briefly to rest my feet for a moment when Dylan walked in he looked over at me and said 'Cam could I have a word with you in my office, your not in any trouble don't worry'. I followed Dylan into his office there were two army officers in there I sat down and Dylan said 'Cam this is Captain Daniels and Lieutenant Anderson' Captain Daniels looked at me and said 'I'm afraid we have some very bad news Cam, your brother was very badly injured in an explosion a couple of days ago I am so very sorry to have to tell you this but your brother passed away that same day'.

That news hit me like a tonne of bricks I took a deep breath and replied 'What happened to him how did he die' Lieutenant Anderson gave me a kind look and said 'He and his army dog Magic were checking for any explosives on a patrol route, unfortunately there was a device in an abandoned car which was triggered by a device planted in the ground. Both your brother and his dog were caught in the blast'.
