"Please lay down, Mr. Brando."
"Get the hell off of me!"
Sitting on the outside of her medical trailer, (Y/N) sat with her head buried in her lap as she wanted to scream. It was only day two, and the British jockey, Diego Brando, was already causing her grief.
It was a meeting by chance a few nights ago when, going on a supply run, (Y/N) stumbled upon a man who was so beaten up that she assumed he was drunk. As an ex-nurse who agreed to work for the race in exchange for safety, the last thing she wanted was a critically injured man who'd refused to listen.
Deciding to finally give up, (Y/N) decided to go back inside instead of suffering from the cold desert night.
As she entered, she avoided eye contact with the blonde-haired man and instead walked to one of the cabinets and took out a plate. "I'm making a sandwich; do you want one?" she softly asked, only to receive an offended scoff. "All you serve around here is trash. I want something good," he demanded. Despite usually getting a sigh or an explanation from the woman, all he received was silence, causing him to ponder why she wasn't dealing with him anymore.
"Hey," he hissed. "Didn't you hear me?" he asked, only to hear more silence. As the man began to watch more closely, he watched as the woman began to silently shake, causing him to wonder what was wrong with her. Before he could pry further, the woman simply placed the plate of food on his bed before quickly turning and leaving the trailer, slamming the door behind her.
"What the hell was that about?" he questioned himself as he looked down at his plate, only to see the small water droplets that stained the side of his plate.
"She was crying...?"
Sitting around a small fire, (Y/N) couldn't help but cry as she flipped through her journal, looking at each entry she had made before being trapped in this place. Four years prior, (Y/N) had escaped from a forced marriage that was arranged by her parents, but due to her husband's drinking problem, violence and arguments seemed endless. She would never find peace after deciding to run away in hopes of escaping the violence and control, only for her ex-husband to cause a witch hunt and accuse her of crimes she'd never committed. Since then, violence and abuse follow her wherever she goes, leaving the only safe place for her to work as a medic on the outskirts of the trails. causing her to be isolated and tormented unless she was caring for a short-term patient.
Setting her journal aside, (Y/N) laid down on the cold, hard floor, closing her eyes as she let out a small sigh.
"I just want it all to end." she thought to herself ,before her world fell into a deep silence.
Waking up with a gasp, (Y/N) found herself startled by the loud snort of a horse. As she looked around, she noticed that she was in bed at her trailer. Sitting up in bed, she realized that she had her shoes and coat off, as well as any other thing that may have made her uncomfortable. Confused about how she got there, she decided to get up and figure out what was going on.
Looking around in the small trailer, she found no sign of Diego anywhere, but what she did see was that the trailer was cleaner than when she left it. Looking onto the small counter top in the trailer, she found a bowl of soup along with a small loaf of bread. It was warm, most likely placed there a few minutes ago. Feeling hungry, (Y/N) decides to quickly eat.
Walking outside, (Y/N) was shocked to see that it was raining. "You're awake?" a voice called. Looking to her side, she was shocked to see the trailer's awning was out, as well as the table and chairs it came with. Diego sat patiently eating his meal as he looked at the woman, causing her to nervously look away.
"Mr. Brando, you're still supposed to be resting," she insisted. Despite preparing herself for a barrage of insults, she was shocked to hear only a whisper from Diego. "I Know." Pointing to the seat beside him, Diego quickly instructed her to sit down, causing her to oblige.
"Why don't you leave this place?" he asked, causing the woman to look at him with contentment.
"Because I work—"
"No." He interrupted. "Why do you let the people who threaten you keep you in fear?" he asked, causing the woman to look at him.
Despite assuming this was intended to be an insult, (Y/N) found herself looking into Diego's blue eyes, only to see the most serious and purest intentions emanating from them.
"I'm weak," she says. "What could I do when the whole world is against me?" she pondered, causing a small wave of silence to wash over them.
As they both looked out into the surrounding desert, watching the rain trickle down from above, (Y/N) watched as Diego randomly stood to his feet.
"Where are you—?"
"I'm leaving."
He coldly explained, causing (Y/N) to look away in silence. "So grab your things." Diego demanded, causing (Y/N) to look at him in confusion. "I'm the strongest person you'll ever meet," he explained. "So you'll be able to be safe with me," he proudly beamed. Looking back at the woman with a smirk, Y/N couldn't help but blush as quickly as he began to brag. "And when I win this race,"
"We'll be at the top of the world."
Without another thought in her mind, from that day forward, they were inseparable; regardless of the dangers or the tension they'd face, (Y/N) would stay with Diego till the day they both died.
