Lia's PoV-
I was in my room thinking about ways to this ditch this family dinner. It would be boring as hell, and there would be nothing new. Same old shit. Two of my uncles and my aunt will attend with their children and start bragging about them. Then they'll ask me if I have decided upon which college I'm going to apply, as if their children have already decided. I'll reply no and my parents will give me a shit about it after coming back.

I've been on my laptop for about 30 minutes and the only result I think reasonable is sneaking out or feigning a cold or fever or something. I think the latter would be more effective as I can't sneak out from the middle of the dinner without being obvious.

I had a very ridiculous thought that I can just convince my parents not to come but that wouldn't work even if I had final exams the next day. Family dinner is something that they take very seriously and can't tolerate any nonsense related to it. That's why I think it will be hard for me to even convince them that I have fever.

The party starts at around 7 in the evening and the dinner is at 7:30. So I'll reach at the party at around 8. It's 4:30 right now so I think I should complete my assignment. The maid will call me around 7 and then inform my parents that I won't be able to come. Then when my parents enter my room the real test will begin.

It's 6:45 and I'm applying some make up to look sick, now I just need to make my skin feel hot and then all done. I dab a cloth of hot water on my skin and switch off the AC and fan to stay hot.

Soon after there's a knock on the door and when I don't reply the person comes in. To my surprise it's my mother. She comes to my side. "Why are you in the bed honey? What's wrong?" Wow! How can someone feign so much concern. Where was this concern when dad beat me to death?

"Fever." I tried to make my voice sound heavy to implicate truth. She touched my forehead. "Oh my gosh! You're burning. We should call a doctor."

"No need. I just want to rest."

"It's okay if you don't come to dinner."

"What about dad?"

"I'll manage. You just rest." With that she left the room.

I scoffed. Why suddenly care for just a fever? She was never there when I needed her. But now I'm scared. What if dad finds out? What if he knows that I'm faking it to sneak out?

The door burst open and he pulled my blanket off me. He pulled my right arm and jolted me up.

"Anthony!" My mother called. I was stunned. This was the first time she ever spoke on my behalf.

"She has high fever. It'll be fine if she doesn't join us." My dad gave me a look of irritation and left my arm. He left the room and I sneaked under my blanket.

"Have a good rest honey." My mother said and closed the door.

I waited for a good ten minutes before getting up. I walked downstairs to ensure they have left. I quickly climbed up to my room and took a quick shower. I picked out my dress for the party. It was a short black velvet dress with balloon sleeves and reached my mid thighs. I paired it with a gold necklace and studs, black YSL heels and a bag.
