The morning sun barely peeked through the thick clouds as I made my way to Blackwell Academy for my second day. The gray, overcast weather seemed to mirror my mood, as I still felt a bit out of place in this new environment. Yesterday's encounter with Chloe had been a surprising and intriguing start, but it left me with more questions than answers.
I walked through the campus, noticing the familiar groups of students clustered together, chatting and laughing. As I headed towards my first class, I couldn't help but wonder if I would see Chloe again today. Despite her tough exterior, there was something about her that drew me in.
Classes began with the usual flurry of lectures and note-taking. In English, we discussed themes in classic literature, but my mind kept drifting back to Chloe, wondering what she was doing. I hadn't seen her in any of my classes, which struck me as odd. Maybe she was just hanging around the campus without attending any classes.
During lunch, I decided to explore the campus a bit more, hoping to run into her. I wandered through the courtyard, weaving between groups of students. Near the fountain, I spotted a group of skateboarders. Among them was Chloe, her blue hair unmistakable as she talked animatedly with the others. I hesitated for a moment, unsure if I should approach her, but my curiosity got the better of me.
"Hey, Chloe," I called out as I walked up to the group.
Chloe turned, a surprised look crossing her face before she broke into a grin. "Hey, Y/N."
"I didn't see you in any classes today," I replied, glancing at the skateboarders.
Chloe shrugged. "That's because I don't go here. Got expelled a while back."
I raised an eyebrow, taken aback by her bluntness. "Really? What happened?"
"Long story," she said dismissively, but her eyes hinted at a deeper pain. "Basically, I stopped showing up and my grades tanked. Blackwell and I just weren't a good fit."
Before I could respond, one of the skateboarders approached us, a friendly grin on his face. "Yo, Chloe, who's your friend?"
"Y/N, meet Justin," Chloe said, nodding towards the guy. "And that's Trevor over there."
"Nice to meet you guys," I said, trying to sound confident.
"Likewise," Justin replied, giving me a once-over. "So, you're new here, huh?"
"Yeah, just started yesterday," I admitted.
"Cool, cool," Justin said, nodding. "Chloe's a good person to know around here. She can show you the ropes."
Chloe rolled her eyes but smiled. "Don't listen to him. I'm not exactly a model student."
"Still, thanks for the introduction," I said, feeling a bit more at ease.
The conversation flowed easily from there, with Justin and Trevor filling me in on the best spots to hang out around campus and in town. Chloe chimed in occasionally, her sarcasm and humor making the others laugh. Despite her rebellious attitude, it was clear that Chloe cared about her friends and was well-liked by them.
As the afternoon wore on, I found myself feeling more comfortable in this new environment. The knot of anxiety that had been sitting in my stomach since I arrived at Blackwell began to loosen. Maybe, with Chloe and her friends around, this place wouldn't be so bad after all.
By the time the final bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, I felt a sense of relief and accomplishment. I had survived another day and even made a few connections. As I walked towards the parking lot, I spotted Chloe leaning against her truck, smoking a cigarette.
