Travis
"Travis!" Ali shook my shoulder and I lifted my head, blinking to see her sitting up, cradling her stomach. The light from the lamp blinded me for a second and I winced, looking over to see her thighs slick with blood.
"Holy shit." I breathed.
"Travis I think we should go to the hospital." Ali whimpered. "It hurts."
"Y-yeah. Yeah." I nodded, quickly sitting up and getting out of bed. "Hey." I grabbed Ali's hands when I noticed her breathing quicken, her chest heaving. "Look at me Ali, look at me. Calm beaths." Urging her through a few slow breaths, I helped her to calm down a little. "Good." I whispered. "Okay, let's find you some pants to wear and get you in the car."
Ali nodded, terror in her eyes but trust in her expression. I helped her to her feet and into a pair of sweatpants before walking her out to the car. She didn't seem like she was in a whole lot of pain, but I always wished I could make every little ounce of hurt go away and wanted to get her to the best doctors I could find to make sure whatever this was stopped. To her credit, Ali put on a brave smile as I drove her to the hospital, breathing carefully and slowly with her hands clasping her stomach.
As soon as I helped her into the E.R, a nurse rushed over with a wheelchair and helped Ali into it. I quickly explained the situation; she was eight months pregnant, she was high risk because of her ovarian surgery, and she'd woken up with bleeding and pain. The nurse nodded, calling out to someone as she moved to wheel Ali towards some doors. I rushed to follow them, clutching Ali's hand as she held on tightly, staring up at me with a trembling lip.
"It's okay doll, I'm here." I reassured her, and she nodded desperately.
We got Ali into a private room and up onto a bed, and the nurse started asking her a few routine questions as she helped my wife out of her clothes. There was blood all over the insides of her thighs, covering her skin, and my mouth went dry as she whimpered in pain, trying to respond. The nurse snapped on a pair of gloves and got permission before moving to check between her legs, murmuring to herself. Ali clasped my hand, trying not to cry.
"Okay." The nurse murmured a minute later. "It's nothing severe to be worried about, but you are in labor. You must have started while you were asleep, and you're already at seven. I think part of the placenta came away from the side of your uterus, but the baby seems fine. I'll hook you up to a monitor so we can keep an eye on you both and we'll see how things go."
"Thank you." Ali nodded, a little reassured. The nurse nodded, pulling off her gloves and assuring us she'd be right back. "Oh my god Travis." She whispered, looking over at me. "This is really happening right now."
"Yeah baby doll, it is." I sat down next to her. "But it's okay. She said it's nothing to be worried about, and it'll all be over soon, and you'll be a mother."
"Oh my god!" Ali sobbed, and I hugged her tightly. "We're having a baby Travis, we're going to be parents!" She cried happily, shaking from her tears. "I'm going to be a mother." She whispered in awe.
I nodded as she sobbed into my shoulder, unable to stop smiling. A little early, and a little scary, but this was about to be the most incredible moment in the world. We were about to be parents for the very first time, welcome our first beautiful little baby into the world. It was all I had ever wanted, and it was happening. I knew Ali felt the same.
The nurse soon returned and hooked Ali up to monitor her vitals as well as the baby, and told us that even though there was a little bleeding, everything was still fine. I was still a little worried but kept up a smile for Ali so that she wouldn't panic, knowing that my reactions would be what she based hers on. I sat next to her and held her hand, making sure she knew I was there.
