It had been four months since V1 had been outfitted with a new frame and arm. V1 was satisfied with the performance of the Wave-Mechanica, having tested the blade and gun mode in both the Cybergrind and Gates of Ascension. The gun mode was like an even stronger Railcannon, while the sword mode could be used in conjunction with the Knuckleblaster for a large burst of melee damage. Although, V1 was not able to test the arm, nor its Quantum Break system, in actual combat. The machine had not been assigned any missions since the data retrieval at Cyclops' old base.
Days had been going by unbearably slow for V1. Its days were either spent training, reading up on old documentation and history regarding the Quarks, or watching reports on how the war was going. Actual combat was something the machine lacked, and missed. It did, however, enjoy the period of rest. The only thing it had known in its original universe was fighting and killing. It had never got to experience actual life before.
While watching a simulcast on Quark physiology, the alarm in its room went off.
Looks like they finally want me for a mission, V1 thought to itself. Wonder what it'll be...
As it walked down to the briefing room, it nearly walked into Uri, who was also leaving his room.
"Woah, Uri! Looks like you're in a hurry!"
"Yeah, command called me down. They do the same for you?"
"Yep. Probably a new mission."
"Wonder what we're doing."
"Dunno."
The two arrived at the briefing room. The mission details were described to the pair.
"We have another Hell Gate we'd like you two to close." The briefing agent paused, seeing the look Uri and V1 shared. "We know what happened last time you attempted to close one, but we are prepared this time. The gate we want you to close is the gate located in the Pacific Red Zone. There is a supply base a few miles away from where the gate is. You can supply there before the mission, and if anything goes awry, they'll be able to pick you up. For the sake of ease, the base will be designated Point Oscar."
Uri raised his hand and asked a question.
"How do you want us to close the gate? I'm assuming the Neutronium Bomb is off limits."
"You'd be correct in that assumption. You'll be going into the gate physically to destroy it from the inside."
"Won't that be a pretty big challenge?"
"We think you can do it, we wouldn't have selected you two otherwise - If there are no other questions, sortie at 0930 hours."
"Roger."
"Roger."
They both walked to the hangar, V1 eager to see actual combat, and Uri eager to fight off Hell.
"Ψ Hyperion, V1, taking off!" exclaimed Uri.
...
During the flight, V1 chimed in to Uri's radio.
"Say, Uri. I've... been thinking."
"About what?"
"If the Quarks are sentient, then couldn't we negotiate an end to the war?"
"If we could communicate with them, maybe. But they have no mouths or other methods of communication that we know of. Why areya' asking?"
V1 paused before answering.
"Just because. No real reason."
"Oh, okay then."
As they approached the supply base, they noticed the sounds of combat in the distance. Uri activated the zoom on the Ψ Hyperion's camera. He saw that the station was under attack by Quarks. They quickly sped toward the base, realizing they'd have to defend it first.
