NOT even a full twenty-four hours has passed since their dinner, but Sydney has been avoiding Rory. She's not angry at her best friend, she's just overwhelmed with how everything the past few weeks has played out. Not even a month ago she was happily enjoying her relatively stress-free life, with Jack Hughes not even crossing her mind. Now, however, in recent weeks, she's thought about and encountered him one too many times for her liking. It feels as if the universe has a personal vendetta against her, and she tries to think back on anything she could have done to piss off whatever higher power exists up there.
Rory hadn't accepted Ellen's invite out of spite. If anything, it was quite the opposite. Rory thought that by accepting the invitation it would mean she had a chance to catch up with the woman she's missed for all these years. She failed to think through how it would make her best friend feel. Sydney's well away of Rory's issues with people pleasing, how she often can't decline things when she really wants to. She has a fear of hurting people's feelings— which is fine, of course. Sydney understands that completely. But she just wishes she wouldn't act on her behalf. She was more than happy to decline the offer, no matter how rude it may come across. Sydney's skilled in the art of flattery, her natural charm usually working to help aid her in side-stepping things she doesn't want to be involved in. She was perfectly comfortable telling Ellen that the game didn't work for her schedule, or that she would love to but has a very important meeting set up on that day. But Rory had beat her to it, accepting on behalf of both of them. That is what has Sydney so frustrated.
It's the next day and Rory takes her best friend's lack of texts as an indicator that she's still upset with her. Of course, she understands why: She overstepped and acted without thinking. It wasn't her place to accept Ellen's invite. She knows how difficult the breakup was on Sydney, and how she's tried so desperately to separate herself from anything relating to Jack. It kills her to know her own best friend is upset because of her and she wants to make it up to her as soon as possible.
