BURGER duty. That's what Sydney calls it. It's the afternoon before the 4th and almost everyone has arrived. Sydney truly has lost count of how many people she's welcomed to the house or how many people she has reintroduced herself to— turns out re-meeting your exes friends for the first time in over a year is exactly as awkward as it sounds. Anyway, greetings aside, the boisterous blonde is having the time of her life working away at the grill in the back yard. Quinn likes to joke that Sydney is a terrible cook but the truth is she's actually quite the opposite.

"Your burgers have nothing on mine" Cole teases, coming to stand beside her as he observes her grilling.

She glances to her left, sends him an eye roll and reaches for the spatula, flipping the remaining patties. "Hey Caulfield, quick question."

"Yeah-?"

"Did your ego stump your growth spurt? Like, did your brain have to focus on one or the other? And yours just choose the former? I'm just wondering." Her tone is innocent with a sweet smile to match as she maintains eye contact with him.

He stares at her for a moment, mouth agape. Damn. It's been months since he last hung out with her properly and he almost forgot how quick she could be with her insults. They were always lighthearted, of course, unless you caught her in a particularly abhorrent mood— in which case it becomes increasingly harder to tell whether or not she's joking.

Cole shakes his head with a small laugh, "wow, really? The height card?"

From a few feet away Jack stands absentmindedly listening to his brother speak, trying not to laugh at what he has just overheard from Sydney.

"You want me to pull the hockey card instead? Mr sent-back-down" at the mention of his rookie year Cole's mouth drops open even further and Jack really has to stop himself from laughing in his brother's face and looking like a maniac.
