--MADISON HAD BEEN FREAKING

...out all morning due to JJ's arrest and John B being missing. The situation was driving her insane, especially after the conversation she had with JJ last night. She stayed at Kie's because Kiara had invited her to Midsummers--well, she was forced to go by her. Kiara instead it would help Madison stop worrying about John B. She knew it wouldn't work.

"This is disgusting," Kiara claimed, she had been criticizing herself in front of the mirror for the past three minutes. Madison sat on the edge of Kiara's parents bed, watching her best friend amusement.

"I know. It's just horrible." Kiara's mom spoke, entering the bedroom. "I'm asking you to relax and go to a fun party." Her sarcasm was evident as she walked towards a smaller mirror.

"I look like a bourgeoisie pig." Kie complained as she turned to face her mother. Earning a chuckle from her best friend.

"Will you people not worry about socioeconomic injustice for one night?" Her mother asked, clipping in her earrings.

Kiara approached behind her mom, who was still getting ready in front of the vanity.

"Mom, people not three miles from here have no power, no running water." Kiara urged, sadness and disappointment painted on her face as she continued, "and we're going to midsummers, that is so tune deaf."

Madison looked down to avoid her mother's gaze. Kiara wasn't lying; even at the Chateau, there's barely any water or power.

Kiara's mother turned to face Kie, "Honey, do you know how hard we had to work to get into the Island Club?" she questioned as she walked away for a second.

"Yeah, Mom. How could I forget? You had to grovel for, like, ten years-"

"Twelve." She corrected her daughter who rolled her eyes at her words. "And we also had to cough up a huge chunk of dough."

"And do you know why we did that?" She walked back into the bedroom.

"To keep up with the Joneses?" she asked, the fakeness of her tone being evident.

"No, so you could have the same experiences that I had as child." Her mom told her, before edging closer to her daughter. "Honey, do you know what the Island Club is?"

"A factory farm for debutantes." Kiara answered, not putting much effort to what she felt the Island Club was.

"It is a nice place, with nice people." Her mother placed her palms against her daughter cheeks as she continued to speak. "Where you can do fun stuff."
