"Finally," I whisper tiredly under my breath as I finish lotioning my body and am about to put some clothes on and go to sleep.

It took me forever to put Kayleigh to sleep. Every time she started to doze off, she would have a nightmare about us dying in the driveby and would wake up crying.

I quickly throw on an oversized t-shirt and some shorts and walk over to the room Kayleigh is sleeping in.

I quietly open the door and slip into the bed beside her. She moves slightly but doesn't wake up. I wrap my arms around her, feeling her small body relax against mine. Her breathing steadies and I hope my presence will keep the nightmares away.

Holding her close, I close my eyes and try to fall asleep, but the commotion from downstairs keeps me up.

I try to ignore all of the noise, but I fear that the loud sounds will wake Kayleigh, so I get up to go investigate.

Heading downstairs, my heart drops at the sight of blood everywhere. Trevon is on one of the couches, bleeding, and Ki'sen is on the other.

Trevon looks over at me. "We tried to hit Augustine's trap house," Trevon mutters through gritted teeth. "...but it backfired, ma."

I rush over to Trevon, trying to assess the situation. "Stay with me, Trevon. Where are you hurt the most?"

He groans, barely able to lift his head. "Everywhere."

I turn to Ki'sen, who looks equally as bad. "Don't move, Ki'sen. I'm calling 911."

"Bitch, what chu think this shit is?" Quayvion says, mean mugging me. "Did you forget what type of business we're in? You ain't calling nobody," Quayvion says aggressively.

"Well, what are we going to do?" I question fearfully.

"Aren't you a nurse? Do yo nurse shit," Quayvion spits back.

"You don't even have food in your house. I wouldn't think you would have sterile supplies," I reply, exasperated. "I need gauze, bandages, antiseptic, anything to clean and cover these wounds. And I need it now."

Quayvion smacks his teeth but turns to the others. "Y'all heard her. Find anything useful. Towels, sheets, whatever. Move!"

I assess Trevon's wounds and see that he was shot in the leg and grazed on both sides of his stomach. Ki'sen was shot in the shoulder.

The men return with enough supplies to help stop the bleeding, but not what we need to remove the bullets and stitch up their wounds.

"Okay, we need to act fast," I say, grabbing a towel and wrapping it tightly around Trevon's leg to slow the bleeding. "Quayvion, I need you to find a belt or something we can use as a tourniquet for his leg."
