I slowly open my eyes to the sight of Quayvion, Trust, and Damien gunning me down.
"Can we please pretend to be "normal" for once and not point guns at me? I am trying to sleep, I whisper groggily, careful not to wake Kayleigh, who's still knocked out cold beside me.
All of the men burst out laughing.
"Oh, you thought you was doing something by asking us nicely, huh, mama? Now you know that don't even sound like us," Trust replies sarcastically.
"Plus you're the newest member of our group, so of course, we gotta fuck with you," Damien says with a grin.
"By da time you actually gotta start handling business, a person pulling a gun out on you is gone feel like nothin'," Quayvion chimes in.
I roll my eyes. "You know, a simple good morning sounds way better than whatever y'all are rambling on about, and what a joy, I can't wait to get used to someone pulling a gun on me. I've always dreamed of that moment," I respond sarcastically.
The men's laughter fades, replaced by satisfied grins. I take a deep breath, praying Kayleigh stays asleep through this madness.
"Is Arianna getting this same treatment, or is it just me?" I question, raising an eyebrow.
"She getting that 'vitamin D' treatment right now," Quayvion says with a smirk.
"Yeah, sounds about right... I shouldn't have asked," I say, rubbing my forehead in regret.
"So... what do y'all want? I mean, we did have a long night last night, I think we should all do a little sleeping in," I suggest.
"Since two of our men are down right now, we figured this would be the perfect time to train you," Trust admits bluntly.
"Train me," I question, a little thrown off. "To do what exactly?"
What chu mean? You think being in a gang is all sunshine and rainbows? Quayvion asks while mean-mugging me for what he considers to be a dumb question.
"I could tell from the drive-by at McDonald's that this most definitely was not going to be anything like a page out of a fairy tale book," I shoot back, my voice dripping in sarcasm.
"You got a little sense of humor, huh?" Damien asks with a grin, clearly amused by my comment.
"She really is funny as hell, if you actually sit back and listen to some of her comments, especially the ones she makes to Quayvion," Trust laughs while shaking his head in disbelief.
"I don't see nothin' funny," Quayvion cuts in, killing the vibe with his serious tone.
"So, back to yo question, mama's, we are all skilled in different things, so we finna teach you what we know," Trust says, keeping us on topic.
"I'm good with cars, Damien is cold at fighting, and Quayvion's aim is lethal when it comes to shooting," Trust says, "You gone come to me first, so whenever you get up and get dressed, I'll be waiting for you outside.
I nod, watching as all the men and their guns file out of my room.
"Why can't any day in this house be normal?!?!?" I mumble in defeat, pulling a pillow over my head in exasperation. "It's always something."
**************
"Mama, is you even paying attention?" Trust asks, watching my pretend serious face."Yeah, why wouldn't I be?" I reply, playing dumb.
