(Authors note of the end of the fic, if you care enough please do read as I try to explain a few things, such as my absence and boundaries and possibly disappearing again. Besides that, enjoy!)

(WARNING; instant, and I mean INSTANT mentions of death and detailed gore. If you're uncomfortable with such topics, I'd suggest moving onto a different oneshot, please!)

word count: 20k+ words (hey so I was feeling a little silly)

Simple Conclusion: Engel and you weren't exactly that close. Until one specific day brought you two a little bit closer, even if it wasn't the brightest of them.

(No difference in the og au, except reader is in the story and it's implied that Claire dies a bit later than her first day instead. Also implied that paper school has a rooftop where some students go to for lunch in this story! I'm unsure if that's the case in the actual animation, but just work with me for this oneshot please.)

— ➤ Claire was dead.

It was a fact you were not yet ready to come to terms with. The idea of your bestfriend being removed from the world hit you harder than a rock, and as much as you wanted to deny it, the truth had already welcomed your eyes.

Anyone would reject it like their life depended on it, with faith that their friend was still alive and it was all just a cruel prank. However, you yourself were unable to do so, afterall you saw her corpse with your very own eyes.

Bones and blood, that cold gaze of her single orb and red liquid spewing out was a sight you'd never be able to unsee. You remembered tears trailing down your face as you struggled to catch a breath, on your knees and taking notice as your ears blocked the screams of any other student, the hushing of the teachers that told everyone to stay back and the similar reactions from kids that you knew were as well close with Claire, just not as close as she was with you.

It was at that time that you had buried yourselves in what ifs, things you could have done to save her, things that would have avoided such a mortifying cause of events. You were set with a mind full of maybes, simple maybes.

Maybe if you had caught onto the fact that she was about to die faster, then you would have had enough time to grab her hand and help her see another day. Maybe if you had helped her study for the test a day prior then she wouldn't have been thrown into a cat and mouse chase so ruthlessly like that terrifying moment.
