Stefan P.O.V

I entered the boarding house, a smile still on my face. I didn't think I would ever see Phaedra again. I know she isn't the Phaedra I knew but being around her gives me that same happy feeling.

I was planning to leave after the accident. But when I was checking up on her, I saw her smile and laugh. I wanted to see it again.

Damon would too. I should call him later. I was pulled from my thoughts when Zach came into the room, newspaper in hand. "You promised." I look at him and take the newspaper.

The Mystic Falls Daily

BODIES FOUND MUTILATED BY ANIMAL
Two local residents reported missing were found dead after police discovered their abandoned vehicle on the highway.

After reading the newspaper I look at him confused, "This was an animal attack." Zach shakes his head. "Don't give me that. I know the game. You tear them up enough, they always suspect an animal attack. You said you had it under control." I give him a look, I don't want to be reminded of what I was. "And I do."

"Please, uncle Stefan. Mystic Falls is a different place now. It's been quiet for years, but there are people who still remember. And you being here, it's just going to stir things up." Zach begs. I'm offended he thinks I would come here just to cause chaos. "It's not my intention." I tell him.

"Then what is?" He questions. He doesn't give me a chance to respond as he continues. "Why did you come back? After all this time, why now?" I internally scoff. He really should question vampires. If I didn't drink animal blood or had a good control on my temper, I would have already gotten annoyed and killed him. "I don't have to explain myself." I tell him.

"I know that you can't change what you are. But you don't belong here anymore." I feel a pang in my chest. This was my home way before it was his. "Where do I belong?" I ask. He doesn't answer. "I can't tell you what to do. But coming back here was a mistake." He slams the newspaper on the table as he walks out. I watch as he leaves the room, a frown on my face.

I look at the newspaper for a few minutes before I realize something. "I guess I don't have to call Damon." I mutter.

I sigh, as I take out a journal. Looking at a picture with me, Phaedra and Damon. All of us smiling. 1864. I sigh softly as I look at the date at the bottom of the page. Everything was so simple then.

In Class, Stefan P.O.V

"The Battle of Willow Creek took place right at the end of the war in our very own Mystic Falls. How many casualties resulted in this battle?" Mr. Tanner, the history teacher, asks. He looks around the room for someone to call on. "Ms. Bennett?" He says.

Bonnie looks up, not expecting to be called on. "Um...A lot? I'm not sure. Like a whole lot." The class chuckles. Mr. Tanner just stares at Bonnie. "Cute becomes dumb in an instant, Ms. Bennett." Bonnie looks down. I internally scoff. He's one of those teachers that gets his high from picking on kids because he has a small dick.

"Mr. Donovan." Mr. Tanner says. Matt looks up. "Would you like to take this opportunity to overcome your embedded joke stereotype?" He asks. Matt just gives the history teacher a smile. "It's okay, Mr. Tanner, I'm cool with it." Mr. Tanner just hums before looking around the room for someone else.
