xxxMeredith Grey sat in her car, her fingers drumming nervously on the steering wheel. The school day had ended, and she had just said goodbye to her best friend, Cristina. Now, she was alone with her thoughts, the weight of the conversation with her mother pressing heavily on her chest. She had spent the past hour trying to muster the courage to drive home, but fear and uncertainty kept her rooted in the parking lot.
Her phone buzzed beside her, and she glanced down to see Derek's name flashing on the screen. She hesitated for a moment before answering, her voice trembling as she greeted him.
"Hey, Derek."
"Hey, Mer," Derek replied, his voice warm and soothing. "How are you holding up?"
Meredith let out a shaky breath. "Not great," she admitted. "I... I need to talk to you about something."
"Of course. What's going on?" Derek's tone immediately shifted to one of concern.
Meredith looked out the window, watching the last few students trickle out of the school building. "My mom found out about what happened last year. About the assault."
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line, and Meredith could almost hear Derek processing the information. "How did she find out?" he asked gently.
"She found my hospital file," Meredith explained, her voice barely above a whisper. "I mean I guess I should have known she'd find out soon, she works in the hospital for crying out loud."
"God, Mer," Derek said softly. "I'm so sorry. How did she react?"
"She was... devastated," Meredith said, her voice cracking. "She apologized, and she wants to be there for me now, but I just... I don't know how to face her. I'm scared to go back home."
Derek's voice was filled with empathy and understanding. "I can't imagine how hard this must be for you. But you're not alone in this, Meredith. You have me, and you have your mom. She wants to make things right, and that's a good start."
"I know," Meredith said, wiping away a tear that had escaped down her cheek. "But it's just so overwhelming. I've spent so long feeling like she didn't care, and now everything is changing so fast."
Derek was silent for a moment, as if choosing his words carefully. "Change is hard, especially when it's something this significant. But it sounds like your mom is trying, and that's important. Give yourself time to process everything, and don't be afraid to lean on the people who care about you."
Meredith closed her eyes, drawing comfort from Derek's words. "I'm just so scared, Derek. Scared of facing her, scared of dealing with all these feelings."
"I understand," Derek said softly. "But you're one of the strongest people I know, Meredith. You've been through so much, and you've come out on the other side. This is just another challenge, and you don't have to face it alone."
Meredith took a deep breath, feeling a small measure of calm settle over her. "Thank you, Derek. I don't know what I'd do without you."
"You won't have to find out," Derek replied, a smile in his voice. "I'm coming to visit in two days, remember? We'll figure this out together."
Meredith's heart lifted at the thought of seeing Derek. "I can't wait to see you. I need you here."
"And I need to be there for you," Derek said firmly. "We'll get through this, Mer. One step at a time."
Meredith nodded, even though he couldn't see her. "Okay. One step at a time."
They talked a while longer, Derek's steady presence a balm to her frayed nerves. By the time they said goodbye, Meredith felt a little more prepared to face the difficult conversations ahead. She took one last deep breath before starting the car, the engine's hum a small but comforting reminder that life, despite its challenges, kept moving forward.
As she drove home, Meredith thought about Derek's words and the support he offered. She still felt scared, but she also felt a glimmer of hope. She wasn't alone in this. She had Derek, and maybe, just maybe, she had her mother too.
When she finally pulled into the driveway, the house seemed less intimidating. She knew the conversations ahead would be tough, but for the first time in a long while, she felt like she had the strength to face them. With Derek's visit just two days away, she had something to hold onto—a promise of love and support that would help guide her through the storm.
