That morning was difficult for me. Waking up in a fright and beads of sweat wasn’t something I was accustomed to.
My sleep companion was gone, and I assumed he had left through the window, which was strangely open. I was sure I had closed it before going to bed. The unsettling thought of a potential intruder sent shivers down my spine, making the morning even more unsettling.
My dream, however, bothered me more than the window. Although I had previously had dreams about something I had experienced in reality, something about this was…different.
Sure, I had snooped into Mr. Hatten’s office out of curiosity, and maybe that was the reason for the dream, but considering what she had said, it felt too real.
The only way to be sure was to confront Hatten about it. But then I’d have to admit that I was in his office. Unless he already knew.
I shook that thought away and checked the time. Almost noon. I still had an hour before I had to work, so that meant I could do a little cleaning.
Throwing on a comfortable shirt and sweats, I headed out the door and walked down to the convenience store just a block away. Usually, it was busy on the roads, but it seemed everyone just wasn’t out today. It was Sunday, so maybe church was still going?
The walk there was oddly peaceful enough that I found myself humming a song out of boredom. But that ended quickly when I started hearing voices out of nowhere.
“Get out of here! This is my alley!”
“Oh, you sweet little kit. Fighting over grown-up land. It might be best for you to go before you end up hurting yourself,” a calm masculine voice answered.
I slowed down and peeked around the corner into the alleyway. Nobody. There were two cats, however. A striped adult stared down at a little white kitten.
“Leave me alone. This is my area!” The squeaky voice chirped.
I knew I wasn’t crazy. The kitten’s mouth didn’t move so where the hell were the voices coming from?
The gravel dirt dragged under my shoes and the two cats looked my way.
“Oh. A two-legged creature. Nosy much?”
I blinked, trying not to freak out.
“Look at it. Just stare at us why don’t you? Creep.” The striped male arched his back and yawned.
“A-are you talking a-about me..?” I stuttered out loud. My fingers dug into the stone wall laid out in the alley.
Both cats suddenly arched their backs, fur rising along their spines.
“What is this? Some sort of prank?”
“No,” I stepped forward into the alley holding my hands in front of me for god-knows-why.
