Lisa Pov
"You have a kid?" I deadpanned to Jenna. She simply nodded, taking a bite of her coffee-flavored ice cream.
"So, was it a one-night--"
"Nope. I was married to a man who is the father of my daughter. But the catch is, we were dating, I got pregnant, he said he would be there, we got married. Everything was going great until--" Jenna started explaining.
"Until you found his dick inside someone else," Lucy finished bluntly, causing Jenna to laugh while I shot them a disapproving look. I scolded them for using such explicit language in front of Harry, who thankfully wasn't paying attention to our conversation.
"No, technically, there was this woman I met while I was working on a case... and some things led from talking at a bar to her kissing me. I kissed back, but I pulled away, apologized to her, and told him the truth. Turns out, he wasn't a jerk like other men. He supported me, helped me out, and we got divorced, but he's still in the picture," Jenna explained, smiling brightly. It didn't escape me that she was interested in a woman. A girl. Lisa.
"Where is your daughter right now?" Lucy inquired.
"She is with her dad on a father-daughter trip. She'll be back this weekend," Jenna replied, her smile growing brighter at the mention of her daughter. Her joy was infectious, making me smile too.
"How old is she?" I asked.
Jenna turned her gaze towards me and answered, "She's turning 6 next month." After a brief pause, she suggested, "We should have a playdate. I think Harry and Rose, my daughter, would have fun."
I agreed, "Yes, that sounds great."
"I'm sorry, but what does your husband do?" Lucy asked, making me groan internally at her typical nosy questions.
"He's a Chartered Accountant."
"Oooh, money man, I see. I would have never left him," Lucy said. Jenna laughed at Lucy's statement.
"I wouldn't have either, but too bad he wasn't the love I wanted. If I had stayed with him, I'd be at fault for leading him on in a loveless marriage, knowing that I'm attracted to women too. I mean, I can explore the world and find the partner I want to spend my life with, without any divorces in between. It's easy to fall in love, but hard to find someone who will catch you at the same time. When you feel it in your gut that this person might, even with the slightest possibility, catch you, don't let them go," Jenna said seriously, then looked at me. "Right, Rachel?" she asked, smirking.
Why is she smirking?
"Yes, of course," I replied, thinking back to what she said. Suddenly, my mind wandered to a certain person. Is she the one who will make me fall in love and catch me at the same time? Am I in a position to have the urge to find someone who can do both after Henry? No. She's a college student, and I'm a grown woman with a kid, looking for a serious relationship.
"Don't you think you should apply that to your life too?" Jenna said, catching Lucy's attention. She turned and looked at me. I let out a nervous chuckle.
"For that, I need to find the person who will catch me too."
"And who says you haven't found one?" both of them said together, smirking at me. I knew who they were talking about—the certain person I was just thinking of.
"And who says I found one?" I retorted. Both of them shrugged their shoulders, finishing their last bites of ice cream.
"Just so you know, I was just a wing woman," Jenna said, motioning for the waiter to bring our bill.
