Abbie started to carefully check each app, but he didn’t find much. In the notes, there were just a few small lists of materials for drawing or other crafts, typical of Lana.
He entered her gallery and didn’t see much, just some photos of them together and pictures of her puppets in little outfits she had made for them.
Lana: "Hehe, they look cute, don’t they? It took me a while to make that little hat for my baby."
Abbie kept scrolling and finally opened the app that scared him the most—the messaging app. Who could be in there? Was there someone among all those contacts who might be competition? He was about to find out.
Timidly, he clicked on it and found just a few chats:
---
Chats 📄📍Claire
📍Bubble
📍Skell
📍Engel
---Abbie raised an eyebrow slightly.
Abbie: "Since when do you talk to Skell? His chat is even above Engel’s, but I thought you talked more with Engel... What do you talk about?"
He felt a bit jealous but didn’t want to admit it. He didn’t want to dive into the chat. He didn’t want to seem insecure or controlling, so he tried to avoid doing it.
Lana: "Oh, that. Well, the art teacher told me I should vary my partner a bit because I’m always with you and blah blah blah."
Abbie: "What? B-But I didn’t know that..."
Lana: "Oh no, that day you went to the dentist, silly. Did you forget?"
Abbie: "Darn..."
He mumbled while entering the chat. He didn’t find much more than a simple exchange of assignments and some photos of the progress on a small model they were working on together.
What bothered him was that Skell sometimes flirted. It was subtle but a bit obvious. Lana wasn’t the type to notice those things and took some phrases very literally.
Abbie: "Can you umm... Does he know we’re dating, Lana?"
Lana: "Not yet, sweetheart. I haven’t seen Skell yet."
She said while hugging him softly from behind.
Abbie: "Just... be careful."
He said with a slight tone of insecurity in his voice while he gently wrapped his hand around Lana’s wrist.
Abbie: "Let’s go to the cafeteria, shall we? I know we need to eat, and Claire and Engel are probably complaining already..."
He tried to smile a bit, but his tone still had a hint of bitterness from seeing Skell flirting with Lana and her innocent obliviousness to it.
Lana put her arm around Abbie anyway while putting her phone in her pocket, and they walked toward the cafeteria. So far, it seemed like no one was looking at them strangely; some just seemed a bit surprised in the hallway.
They finally reached the table with Claire and Engel. Both were eating, but Claire was eating two cupcakes at the same time, so she barely noticed her friends arriving.
Engel: "Ah, hey, calm down. I know they’re good, but you’re going to choke."
Claire: "Hmmf hmg—Shh, I want to break my record."
She said with her mouth full while stuffing the two cupcakes into her mouth, which was honestly a bit hard to watch.
Engel: "You and your ideas..."
He noticed Lana and Abbie.
Engel: "Ah, hey guys... You took a while there. Is everything okay? Is Abbie feeling better now?"
Lana: "Yeah, don’t worry... We just needed to talk. He’s so sweet; he worries about me so much."
Lana continued being affectionate with Abbie, who hid his face in his hands.
Claire: "Hmmg-... Finally."
Claire started choking. Engel quickly helped her by pressing her stomach, making her spit out the excess cupcakes awkwardly.
Engel: "What did I tell you!?! You’re such a-"
Claire: "AH- uff uff... That... that was horrible, horrible ugh..."
She turned to look the other way.
Claire: "WAIT-"
Engel stepped back quickly, letting go of her while Lana let out a small giggle and looked away.
Claire: "H-Hey, don’t laugh at me..."
Lana: "Hehe, sorry... But you shouldn’t eat so much in one bite, even if you like it a lot, Claire. You almost choked."
Abbie: "Yeah..."
Engel: "She wanted to see how many cupcakes she could fit in her mouth, so well, you saw what happened. I have to take care of her because she’s such a little klutz..."
Claire: "Klutz!? You’re the klutz, you-"
Abbie: "Hey, umm... Was there flan today? I-I wanted to get some, but I had to go talk with Lana."
Lana: "Oh right, your flan."
She started looking at the cafeteria display in a panic. Fridays were flan days, Abbie’s favorite dessert, so Lana usually made sure to get him one.
Lana: "I-I don’t see any, darn."
Claire: "I bought an extra one. Here, Abbie, I know you like them a lot."
Engel: "And for me?"
Claire: "For you, there’s umm... meatloaf. It’s your reward."
She put a piece on Engel’s plate.
Engel: "Very funny, Claire, very funny..."
He mumbled but still ate the somewhat bland meatloaf.
Lana: "Well, let’s eat, Abbie. You need energy to be this cute, you know? Open wide..."
Lana started feeding Abbie tenderly with a spoon. The soft pudding and potatoes at that moment felt like a dream, pure softness in Abbie’s mouth.
It wasn’t because the food was special; it was just the fact that Lana was feeding him that made the food taste better and more delicious.
Abbie chewed slowly, so it took a while to feed him, but even so, Lana made sure to feed him with that same loving care as always.
Abbie: "Hmm... Thank you, Lana, but you know, I feel a bit embarrassed w-when you do that."
Lana: "But I like doing it. I feel like I’m taking care of you in some way."
Abbie: "Heh, I know... I appreciate it."
Abbie was embarrassed to admit it, but he loved it when Lana treated him like a baby. Even when she finished feeding him, she held him in her arms while she ate.
Abbie could only feel secure next to her, like a little bird in her hands, while time passed, and he barely listened to Lana talking with Claire and Engel.
