Hannah's P.O.V

"Hannah you will be partners with Kayla for this project." The teacher told me, then continued listing off other names of students. "Grace you will be with Mamrie." She finished.

'Damn it,' I sighed, 'I'm not with Grace,' The class broke into their groups of two.

"Hey Hannah, you're pretty good with this stuff right? 'Cause I'm awful!" Kayla spoke. Kayla is a confident person, she's also one of Grace's friends. But I know that I'll be stuck doing all the work on this project.

'I wish I was Grace's partner.' I nodded to Kayla, answering her question.

"Look, why don't you just let me do the project? I could get it done a lot faster and you probably have more important things to do than some dumb project for history class, right?" She just looked at me. "Great. So I'll have it done by next week, that leaves you with a couple days to go over it so you don't look dumb when we present it." I told her.

"Oh um okay, sounds good. Let me know if you need help." She smiled, obviously grateful.

. . .

School ended for the day and Mamrie and I were walking back to my place together.

"So you and Grace are partners huh?" I asked, trying to sound casual.

"Yup, she's pretty smart ya know. I wasn't expecting her to be." She replied.

"Yeah I know. She gets really good grades. Which is surprising because of how much time she spends with her little brother Tim because their Dad isn't around." I didn't realize myself ranting on about Grace.

Mamrie looked at me and smiled. "So you know a lot about Grace?" I stopped and noticed how much I had said.

"Well... I, uh..-"

"Spill it Han," Mamrie just continued to smile.

"She stopped by work last night, we talked for a while." I told Mamrie, trying to make it sound like I wasn't interested. I failed.

Mamrie poked me. "You like her." She giggled.

I smiled wide and laughed, "Shut up" I didn't try and argue.

"Well go for it little Hart," Mamrie encouraged.

"Mames she's straight. Plus, who would like me?" I said with my hands in my pockets, kicking a pepple on the sidewalk.

"A fucking lucky person" Mamrie said. "Maybe Grace is lucky."

"I doubt that." I told her. 'Impossible'

Mamrie didn't say anything the rest of the walk home. But I just kept thinking,

'What if...?'
