I step onto the train and don't see Kerrie anywhere. She completely disappeared. I can't look for her because people are everywhere, she probably got lost in the crowd. At least I know she is on the train. I got on here with her. I walk a few doors down to the emptiest car. There is just one person in here.
"Excuse me, but may I sit down?" I say politely.
"Yeah, sure." The boy turns to look at me. He is a ginger with blue eyes. Pale skin adorned with brown freckles. He looks very nice.
"Thanks." I sit down in the seat across from him. The boy looks at me like he is about to say something but he is interrupted by another voice.
"May I sit here, everywhere else is full." It's a girl, she has paculare eyes. Grey eyes, I have never seen someone with the eye colour grey. It's very interesting. She has mid-length black hair.
"Sure, come in," The boy says. The girl smiles slightly and sits next to the boy.
"What are your names?" She says. Her voice is soft and gentle. It's strange to hear but somehow comforting. Makes me feel less worried about losing Kerrie on the train. I wonder where she is? Or who she is with?
"I am Eain Moon." The boy says. His voice is a little higher than I expected.
"And I am Mathias Scarlett" They both go wide eyed. I must admit having everyone know who you are is unsettling. I really preferred it when no one knew me.
"Like THE Scarlett! Mathias and Kerrie Scarlett! You're famous! I am Naveah Cavesy" Naveah looks excited.
"Nice to meet you Naveah, and you as well Eain" Eain looks back out the window. We ride on the train for a few hours, it stays pretty quite. We are all I guess nervous about the new school. Nobody is really looking around or speaking, everyone is just keeping to themselves. We pulled into the train station late that night. The sun has turned the sky a golden, pink hue.
"All first years hurry up. Off the train." Eain and Naveah both get up. I follow them. When we get off the train, I see Kerrie. She is further back with a group of boys. She actually seems happy. I was going to go talk to her but I don't want to disturb her. I pick up my pace and walk beside Eain. We are maybe mid way back and at the front is a Professor. All first year students walk together. We walk and get into carriages.
"This is so exciting! I can't wait to be sorted!" Naveah burst with joy.
"Sorted?" It's like everyone in this word is speaking another language. I don't understand what most of their words mean.
"Yes, sorted into our houses. There are four houses. Mohana, Glaucia, Ananta, and Hordad. Mohana Represents courage, bravery and determination. Glaucia Represents excellent wisdom, wit and a skill for learning. Ananta Represents ambitious, shrewd and possibly destined for greatness. Lastly Hordad Represents a strong sense of justice, loyalty, patience, and a propensity for hard work." Naveah says. Evermore has so much to remember. Everything is confusing.
"All of my brothers are in Mohana," Eain says. "I hope I will get in as well."
"How many brothers do you have?" I am curious. I only have Kerrie and she is more in charge then I am, even though I am older. The carriage goes onto a cobblestone path, everything gets louder.
"I have three older brothers and one younger sister. Peredur, Hector, Ivor, and Ornec. Peredur and Hector are twins. Ivor is the eldest. And Ornec is our sister." Eain explains. I could never imagine having that many siblings. The carriage stops and the door opens. I get out first and Eain and Naveah follow behind me. Everyone gathers together and walks into the huge castle. The walls are big, soft yellow fire light curls against the walls. Everything is so beautiful. Everyone walked further into the castle. Up a staircase and down a corridor. Everyone goes up another staircase but the ones in the front stop walking. Everyone in the front row moves so others can crowd around. Naveah, Eain, and I walk to the front. There is an older woman, she looks 50 or 60. She looks scary. Tall, grey hair and in a ruby and golden cloak.
"Settle down everyone. Settle yourselfs" Her voice is soft but her tone is strict. Everyone goes quiet. "Thank you. Welcome to Evermore Academy first years. I am Professor Celeste Caluo. Now before you go in to join the others you must be sorted into your houses. They are Mohana, Glaucia, Ananta, and Hordad. Now while you're here, your house is your family." Professor Caluo walks away leaving us alone. Some people in the back start talking. Five minutes later the Professor returns. "We are ready for you now, let's go" Everyone starts walking. Two huge doors made of wood stand in front of us. When we get closer they open. Now we are surrounded by other people and walking directly up the centre path. Caluo stops and everyone else does as well. She takes one single step onto the platform. "Now when I call your name I will place the sorting hat on your head and we will see your house. Lovel Blackbavrne." She says. Lovel steps out from the back. He looks annoyed at something. He stands and Caluo puts a brown old hat on his head. He has weird bright blonde hair. His entire body looks like a misshapen snowflake.
"Ananta!" The hat says loudly. A table to the far right starts clapping their hands. Lovel gets down and walks over to them.
"Nevaeh Cavesy'' Naveah gives me and Eain a nervous look but walks up on the platform. Caluo put the hat on her head. It waits a bit, making a decision.
"Mohana!" It says. The table to my direct left starts clapping. Naveah walks down the stage and joins the table. I notice a group of boys looking directly at Eain. They all look extremely similar.
"Lucius Easom" When Lucius walks up to the front two other boys and Kerrie follows behind him. Kerrie hasn't seen me yet. Lucius steps up, before the hat can even touch his head completely the hat speaks.
"Ananta!" Lucius steps down and joins Lovel on the opposite side of the table.
"Ara Gage" The boy to Kerrie's left steps up on the platform. I notice how Lucius and Ara look surprisingly similar, just different eyes.
"Ananta!"
"Eain Moon" Eain steps up and now I am alone in the crowd.
"Great another Moon boy, best let it be… Mohana!" Eain smiles and walks down the platform. He sits beside Naveah and another boy. The boy ruffs Eain hair. I am going to guess that's one of his brothers. I still couldn't imagine having so many siblings.
"Isha Rowntree" The last boy beside Kerrie steps onto the platform.
"Ananta!" Are all of Kerrie's new friends going into the same house?
"Now for the Scarlett twins. First is Mathias Scarlett '' Kerrie looks around and we lock eyes before I walk forward. Caluo puts the hat on my head. I feel it move around and adjust to my head. I don't like the feeling.
"Mohana!" The hat is a lot louder than I thought it would be. I am so glad to be in the same house as Naveah and Eain, now if Kerrie would just get in this house as well.
"Kerrie Scarlett" Kerrie steps away from the crowd. The hat is placed on her head.
"Now this is interesting indeed. Twins are normally different in their own ways, but never like this. You Kerrie possess different qualities from you brother, almost completely different minds. Where to put you? Ah! Ananta!" I am not surprised. Kerrie has always been different from me. She is cruel sometimes, and cold hearted. One time when a neighbourhood cat was killed on the street she saw it happen and didn't flinch. I always knew something was different about her. I do hate that we are not in the same house though. Your house is supposed to be your family, but not even my own family member is in this house. A few more kids get sorted. When everyone is sorted the hall is a bit loud with conversation. An old man that was sitting in the centre of the table that all the old people are sitting at stands up and walks forward. He clears his throat and everyone is so silent.
"Welcome Everyone to another year at Evermore. I am Headmaster Derderos, for those that don't know. A few reminders for the new year. Everyone please keep out of the forest and cliffs that surround the school. And the sixth floor corridor near Mohana common room is off limits to everyone. Unless you wish to die an early death. Now that those are out of the way, let's feast!" That is what you call a mixed message speech. Derderos snaps his fingers and food appears. Lots, and lots of food. I have never seen so much food, it's amazing. Eain has already started eating. Naveah is more slow eating. I try a bit of everything. The food is amazing. I love it so much, just everything. After some time everyone stops eating and plates start to disappear. Derderos speaks again. "I hope everyone loves the feast. Now if the house Prefect's would please take the first years to their common rooms." A boy that also looks like Eain stands up.
"Come on, first years, let's go." I stand up and the others follow me. I am at the front of the queue. Eain is on my left and Naveah on my right. We walked up several staircases. We enter a tall tower, and paintings are hung around the room. They all move, some great people as they pass. We go up another flight of stairs. The Prefect stops at a painting and says something but I can't hear him. The painting opens inward and everyone continues inside.
"Everyone file in. Come on let's go" We all spread out. "Alright, Hello everyone. I am Ivor Moon, head boy of Mohana house. Where you are right now is the Mohana common room. Just a few rules, pick up after yourself. Keep quiet after 10pm. Remember everyone uses this space, be polite here. And never get caught in another common room that isn't yours. Now boys your dormitory is up the stairs on your right, girls same for you just on the left. All of your belongings are already in your rooms. Now let's hurry up and get to your rooms before the others come up for bed." Nobody waits, most of us are too tired and excited. I get lost in a group of people. I make my way up the stairs. Finally I found my room. My dorm mate is Eain. At least someone I know! I walk in and just like Ivor said, everything of mine is on one side of the room. I go over and start to unpack my things. Eain finds our room. He starts unpacking as well. I can't wait to sleep! There is wardrobe's against the walls. I take my clothes from the trunk and put them in the draws.
"Your sister is in a different house? I thought that couldn't happen." Eain speaks from his side of the room.
"Yeah, but that makes sense kinda. Kerrie has always been very different from me. She has a certain mindset." There are also new clothes that the school provides for everyone. I put everything into a drawer.
"How so? I mean, usually twins are very similar. At least my older brothers are. They are almost exactly the same."
"Yeah, I saw your brothers at dinner. They act and look exactly the same, but not me and Kerrie. Even though I am older and I want to protect her, she somehow is always three steps ahead of me. She protects me more than I thought was possible. She is crazy sometimes. She has almost been killed many times and somehow she survives every time. She's even saved me. Nothing scares Kerrie, I don't even think I have ever seen her cry."
"What do you mean she has saved you? And she never cries?" Eain gets tired of putting his things away and instead sits on his bed.
"It was a few days ago actually. My cousin went to the Aquarium for his birthday. But while we were there, Thama, was being childish and bumped into me. But when he did it made me fall off the platform we were standing on. I fell off into the pool under us. It was 13 feet deep and I couldn't swim. Kerrie saved me. She never cries, but is scary when she get mad"
"That sounds traumatising, but also fun. I would do that." I turn and look at Eain. I shake my head. "What?" Eain says defensively.
"Nothing. I just think it's strange to think that almost dying would be fun." I pick up my now empty trunk off the bed and sit it on the floor and slide it under the bed. I get up and sit on my bed. The mattress is better than mine at home. Everything here is amazing and so different.
"I didn't mean the almost dying part, I meant the falling into the water part. It sounds fun. Falling off a platform into a deep pool of water. It sounds very fun. But I do love swimming." Eain turns and lays down on his bed.
"I guess it would have been fun if I was able to swim." I lay back against my mattress. Eain laughs, I look at him for a second then start laughing too. We sound like a bunch of idiots but it's good. Soon we calm down and go to sleep. So much has happened in just three days. I do wonder what Kerrie is doing though. It is weird being in a room and her not being here. We have never been apart. Our entire life we shared a room, clothes, toys, money. Everything changed so fast and I don't understand it yet. This place is like a fairytale. Everything is so perfect, I am scared I will wake up and it will be over.
